Running groups
Does anyone know of any running groups in the Park Slope area? I signed up to be on a mailing list for one, but all of the meetings are for long runs as members train for the marathon. I guess they are neglecting to realize that not everyone who wants to run is training for a marathon (or like me, entered the lottery, but did not get in.)
I'm looking for a group that runs maybe 4 miles- longer runs on the weekend perhaps (maybe 6-8). I am also looking to run in the evenings.
Anyone know of anything?

The problem with both it and BRRC is that the membership is relatively small, so the group options are limited.
In addition to the hash, I do my speed workouts with the NY Harriers, a much bigger group and they seem to have enough members that you might be able to piece together a group of Brooklynites/downtowners.
Also Jackrabbit and Slope Sports are probably the best places to start come to think of it. Kirsten at SS is super helpful and Jackrabbit has a pretty active bulletin board. -
They allways have a bunch of postings on a board at Jack Rabbit on 7th Ave & Carroll

PPTC has a group run on Saturday mornings; I've gone to their meetings and they are nice people and definitely not all training for the marathon; unfortunately I've never done the group runs because of a yoga conflict. Also I think Slope Sports has a weekly free group run in the evening. Jackrabbit has pricey training groups which are probably fun if you can afford it.

Anyone know when the next 5K race in the park is scheduled? I've been running a lot recently and would love to challenge myself.

Lucky you, there's one this weekend. Miles for Midwives.

Nice, thank you!! -
Also, try the free organized runs in the city by Nike. Last night we met up at Niketown and ran one of three distances, 3, 5 or 6 miles. After the group runs, head back to Niketown for free refreshments and food, free gear (last night it was dri-fit socks, got 4 pairs).
Earlier in the summer I ran with them from a run starting at BB King's over to the west side highway. After the 5 miler, there was an open bar and finger foods, I got 3 dri-fit t-shirts that run.
At most of their runs, if you want, you can give them your ID and they give you a pair of nikes + an iPod to try for free (you don't have to, but you can if you want some music to run with).
Nike, despite their business practices regarding labor, is REALLY in tune with NYC running. This is the best city to be in if you're a runner! They have runs on the weekend and I think every T/TH evenings, all free.
Also, join NYRRC if you have not already, that's another nice way to meet up with more runners. I'm a member of that and BRRC, but you're right, most of us are training for the marathon now, but there are still evening runs in the park, you can do a lap or two or three with the club.
Also, I think jackrabbit sports has organized runs for the community on a weekly basis. Check out the store on 7th near Tutta Pasta (I forget the x street).
The people at PPTC are really nice too, and have a web site and organize runs and races in the nabe. -

Haha, I love you BRRC people, "you could just join us for three fast loops of the park, which we'll be doing as a warm-up before we head off for a round-trip run to Washington Heights."

hahaha, oops! I only meant they could pop in and joing for as long as they wanted to and not feel committed to run for ever; some of us will do 5 or 6 laps, it's only 3.35m around and if you're in training for Nov 5, you'll need more than a lap or two :-) but if you're not training, a lap will keep you in shape or burn off a few beers! -

I know, but I've lurked on the BRRC e-list and have seen posts much like what I wrote above. I'm just jealous, I wish I could be that kind of runner. I just today canceled my marathon registration thanks to a nagging hamstring injury and general bad timing.

So I'm bitter. -
Kosher Dave hit most of the key points, but since I coach for both Nike and Jack Rabbit, allow me to elaborate. Nike has free runs M and W that meet at at NY Running Co (in the Time Warner building) and T and Th evenings and Saturday mornings at Niketown. We also have groups at the Runners' Station, along the Hudson at Canal St on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. All are free, with bag check, and occasional giveaways. I usually have a staff of 5-6 "pacers" who run along with the group. More info is at nikerunning.com/nyc
Jack Rabbit's located at 151 7th Ave (b/w Carroll and Garfield.) We have a variety of training programs, most of which meet 2x/week for 10-16 weeks. Some are for beginning runners who start out only able to run 1-2 minutes at a time, and others are for marathoners and triathletes. These programs are more comprehensive than the Nike runs, in that the partipants have access to the staff throughout the week, as opposed to just during the runs, and we suggest workouts to do on your own as well as with the group. We also have 2-3 workshops on topics such as injury prevention, nutrition, etc. throughout the programs. more info at jackrabbitsports.com
As has also been mentioned, Slope Sports (slopesports.com) has free groups that meet weekly and are a good resource. PPTC (pptc.org) has fewer organized runs but are a great bunch and a good way to meet others. If you just want to have some fun and run in a social setting, the Hash House Harriers are a good bet.
Hope this helps. -

I was trying not to push the hash again, but for what it is worth we run every other monday at 7pm in Brooklyn, and I am happy to answer any questions you might have. On-On!
