The menu is posted in the window, and it looks like there's some last minute bustling inside! No scoop on the official opening date (Cheryl looked very busy inside, and I was running home - the website says the 6th - today - but it looked closed to me) but here's the website - looks like we're getting a partial lorem ipsum version, I'm sure soon to be corrected.

  • I've seen her on the food network. I think that she used to operate Sol in Fort Greene. Should be a welcome addition to the neighborhood. She even has some Korean dishes.
  • Yay!
    finally!

This is what I am talking about!
  • oooh, nice! I hope they have interesting and plentiful vegetarian plates. :-)
  • I hope they do well and get traffic in that location... I wonder if their bar will compete with Sepia?
  • Coool!

For anyone who doesn't want to visit the website right this sec: the location is (edited 'cause I got it wrong the first time) 234 Underhill.

Can't wait to check this out.
  • Cheryl's location? that's at Underhill and E. Parkway - 234 Underhill, I think.. what's at 105 underhill?

Oh! My bad. I looked at the directions page on the website and thought it said it was at 105 Underhill, but on second look I think that's one of the places where parking is available.
  • I stopped by and took a look inside - very cool.
I am glad that a quality place is finally comoing to the neighborhood. I know everyone brags about Toms and Cafe Shane, but neither place really impressed me that much. I always thought folks were grasping a little bit when it came to both of those places - because there is nothing else to talk about in the immediate area.

Then there is The Islands, yea, but lets be honest, their service and speed is AWFUL and inexcuseable. I dont go there anymore because I hate being ignored for 15 minutes while standing right in front of the owner.

Seriously, no "hello", no "I'll be with you in a second", no eye contact. I stayed out of desparation for some oxtail - but that was the last straw. 2 other guys were in front of me and they were in the same boat. We could only look at each oher and laugh at how ridiculous the situation was.
They dont seem to understand that you can take and order, write it on a ticket and take another order... They take an order, theyturn around and make it, THEN take another order. That is just stupid!!! Sometimes it will be for the same thing and they could have COMBINED the orders while making them???

All I wanted to do was PLACE my order and come back in the obligatory 25 minutess. I couldnt even do that. I like the ladies that run the place, but I can't do it anymore. I'm going to the other place on Classon and Lincoln(?) or ordering from El Grand Castillo on Flatbush instead.
How can the service be so bad at the islands?

I took a look at the menu for Cheryl's too - wow.
When she opens up she will be PACKED for the fist few months and beyond. AND it looks like you can stop by for coffee in the morning on the way to the train....I hope that is the case.
  • So is it officially open?
What has two thumbs and is hungry for Cheryl's Global Soul Food?

    This guy.

this may end up being my only tiny complaint - right now, it looks like they open at 9am (per their website hours), well after my early coffee. Now, they do say that they are open until 11pm, which is fantastic, and I don't want Cheryl to keel over from lack of sleep, but once they get things running perhaps they can figure out how to catch the off-to-work am crowd.
  • In response to several of my earlier questions, it appears that the website does have pictures of muffins.
  • Looking foward to some lorum ipsum... :D
  • just saw a new sign up - opening tomorrow! (10/10)
  • I talked to them today. Dinner won't be running until Fri, but they'll have other stuff sooner. There is a menu posted - entrees mostly in the teens and twenties. I think I saw Tamarind Jerk Chicken.

Is there any place in the area that does straight-up southern soul food?
  • There's Mitchells, which is sort of a trip and extremely spotty.

There's also Bob Law, which I've never visited.
  • The Soul Spot, on Atlantic, is probably better than those, but still kind of crummy.
  • Finn wrote: There's also Bob Law, which I've never visited.
I can vouch for Bob Law's -- great place for whiting with greens and mac'n'cheese.
  • I had excellent shrimps at Bob Laws. Great cooking there.

What philosophy of mac 'n' cheese are they.

I could use a fallback for that when I don't feel like firing the oven.
  • Ladies and Gentleman, I have seen the top of the muffin, and lo, it is good.

I went to Cheryl's this morning eagerly anticipating my first of many forays into the broad world of Global Soul Food, only to find that, unfortunately, there had been some hangups with some of the equipment (after all, it was the first day) and no food was ready yet. The space was clean and attractive, though, plus they were serving coffee and I had a ton of reading to do, so I figured I'd hang out and wait for the muffins.

After waiting this long for these muffins, what's another half hour?

The coffee was delicious, I should note. I overheard one of the women who worked there telling a customer that they get organic coffee from Bergen Farms. I don't know if that means anything to anybody, but I know that many of the regulars on this board have coffee loyalties. I got a latte for 2.50 and was more than satisfied, especially when, while I sat and read, they brought out another cup, on the house. Pretty good investment on their part, since I'll probably return that 2.50 tenfold by the end of the week.

About 25 minutes into my coffee drinking and book reading, the redolent air of fresh muffins swept through the brightly-lit, mostly natural wood dining area. The painting on the wall of the elephant, mid-dance, seemed to come to life in anticipation.

Man, I really need to find something better to do with my time.

Anyway, I am proud to say that I ate the first muffin in Cheryl's Global Soul Food history, and, I may add, it was worth every minute of the wait. It was a reasonably-sized (especially when compared to those at Joyce - not to hate, I still love Joyce. I'm sorry, Joyce.), sugar-coated blueberry muffin. It may have had to do with the fact that it was still steaming hot, and perhaps my venal taste buds were manipulated by the free coffee, but good lord, that was a good muffin. The cake part was not too sweet, which was perfect considering how many molten blueberries were in there, providing all the flavor and sugar I needed.

To top everything off, Cheryl told me that, since I waited patiently (I'm pretty good at the veneer of patience) for the first muffin, it was on the house.

Again, I imagine her investment was a smart one, as now she will have all the free advertising she needs, thanks to me. I have a menu - lunch looks pretty good and significantly less expensive than dinner (5-9 dollar sandwiches, plus a soup of the day) and Cheryl said that they hoped to be serving lunch by Thursday.

Please go support Cheryl and her Global Soul Food, because they gave me a free muffin. And it was good.
  • I stopped in for a coffee yesterday as well, but I didn't get a free muffin. The coffee was about a thousand times better than the bodega next door, but wasn't quite up to Joyce's level (held back mainly by being brewed a little too weak). I'd say it's about as good as Prospect Perk, which is a major improvement over anything else available at this end of the neighborhood. The space is great, and the staff was really nice. I'm looking forward to trying the lunch menu (might even try it today, if they're ready). They have soups for $4.50-$5.50, salads for $5.50, sandwiches from $5 for PB&J to $7.95 for a BLT, a "Luigi" (an Italian combo), a "Chelsea" (turkey with greens cucumber, tarragon mustard and mayo), or a "Sophia" (Mozzerella, tomatoe and basil), and several sandwiches in the $6-$7 range. The sandwiches seem a little pricey to me, but potentially worth it if they're really good.

Plus, (presumably for a limited time) you can get a free coffee, or $2 off lunch/dinner with the menu/flyer.
  • When are they open for dinner?
  • Just went in to Cheryl's today-- they are officially open for lunch starting today.
Great coffee, and the best scones i've ever had (Pineapple one is amazing).
the prices for everything else are decent too.

And dog friendly-- they let me bring my pup in, and the only other places that let me do that is KDogg's cafe (which i love) on Lincoln and Flatbush by the Q.

Anyway-- I like Cafe Shane's a lot but I was much more impressed by my first visit to Cheryls.

    I cant wait for brunch.
  • It's illegal to allow dogs into an establishment that serves food. Hopefully Cheryl (or her staff) will stop this practice because otherwise they could get a hefty fine from the Health Department.

They are the traditional southern deep dish baked mac n cheese, not the northern creamy loose mac and cheese. Personally, its among the best I've ever had from a take out place. Plenty of artery clogging cheese, but flavorful, not dull and tasteless.

And as for Cheryl's, SO has been at a couple of events catered by her and raves about the food, so we can't wait until the place opens.
  • They shouldn't let dogs enter food establishments. People are dirty enough. I like dogs but not with my lunch and dinner. Who knows when the owner last washed the dog, and it had to walk the "clean" streets of nyc to get there.
  • I hope it's not too dog friendly .... sorry, I'm sure you dog is cute and all, but don't make me put up with it while I'm eating...
  • only restaurants with patios allow the dog sit while eating, but as far as running in for a quick cup to go, patrons should be able to come in for a second.

plus they have benches outside for those dog owners who want to stay and enjoy it for a sec.

there's a huge population of morning dog walkers to prospect park and its in a perfect location, these places can benefit a lot from these people.

And, as far as I can tell, the people who actually care enough about their dog to take them out every morning are taking care of the health and grooming of their dog a lot. i barely see a dog playing in the park that I wouldn't want to touch, nor an owner who is going to let their dog get mangy.

thats just my observation-- ive seen my share of fuckedup looking pitbulls in leather harnesses with their owners holding sticks and hitting them yelling "shut the fuck up dog"-- but i don't think those are the dogs that have owners stopping to get a latte on the way to the park in the morn.
  • Where is Cheryl's located?
