The Death of Junque on Flatbush
[UPDATE: The antiques store, Second Time Around Furniture, and now the NCJW Thrift Store (see picture of the place, gutted, below). What is this world coming to? Oy. -DH]
Just heard this... Around 9:30 this morning, the antiques store on Flatbush (the one a few doors down from Franny's) was moving all its junque out on the sidewalk and into a moving van. Apparently the place was still "open for business" up to the very end... noisefootprint said one of the guys loading the truck (jokingly?) encouraged her to go inside and browse around.

Oh, that's too bad. I like the guy who runs it (or at least I think he runs it -- if I'm thinking of the right antiques store, of course). We had a very interesting conversation about the sad commonalities between Liza Minelli and Michael Jackson (sad but true).

I went in there a couple of times and was interested in stuff but I remember thinking they wanted a rediculous amount of money for stuff that was'nt in pristine condition or that unique, and they were unwilling to work on the price at all. I'm not surprised they're closing down, its too bad.

A lot of second hand stuff on Flatbush has closed down this week. The Jewish Women's thrift shop was closing when I went by on Saturday, as was that antique store. I noticed that the Second Time Around furniture (also affiliated with Jewish Women's thrift store) over behind Yummy Taco is closed too.
I was particularly bummed about the thrift shop because those ladies are really much nicer than the folks in the Salvation Army. It was a pleasure giving them my gently used stuff. Does anyone know other places in the neighborhood to donate clothes, housewares, books, etc? -

Oh, no. Oh, no. I can't believe they are gone! They were truly one of the last old school gems and they really had a nice selection of stuff.

I'm going to walk by the place this week to see what's up. But dammit, it seems all the cheapo places to shop in this city are fading fast.
UPDATE: Did swing by it, and was amazed that the place was empty. One of the two sisters was there in the store with the other African American woman who worked there. They recognized me and when I asked "So, you're closed forever?" they said "Sorry, yes, thank you for coming..." Don't know why, but that place has been there virtually forever. And I remembber going there back when I had my first out of college apartment in 1992/93. Seeing it all cleared to the walls was just a shock.
This city is changing in ways I just don't understand anymore. -

Me either.
Here are the remnants of the National Council on Jewish Women (NCJW) thrift store on Flatbush - you know, the one that used to pile all sorts of treasures out on the sidewalk. Oh... wonder what they have today? ... Well, you can forget about that, now. Happy?
Away with your FILTHY, pre-owned items! We must have it new. New! -
And while you are at it... just throw all that stuff that you don't like or use anymore into the garbage!!! Don't bring it somewhere that others might get use out of it... to the land fill and pronto!
(trying to reference the simpsons here... but I don't see a "native american crying" emoticon...)
