Where can I donate books? — Brooklynian

Where can I donate books?

I got a bunch of textbooks and assorted other reading materials that I want to get rid off but cannot bring myself to throw it in the garbage.
Good books, hardcover, softcover etc.

Where can I donate them?

  • Subject: if they are decent condition

take them to any library. GOOD CONDITION ONLY. probably a school would take them too, IF they are in good condition.

put a posting on this website, in the classifieds or free section, and someone might take them off your hands.

there is also a website called freecycle.org, that has a brooklyn section.

you could also post on the free section of craigslist.

No. The Clinton Hill library does NOT accept book donations any longer.

I know that the main branch does.
  • There used to be a used book store on Livingston, behind the Fulton Mall, that I used to take my old books to. I'm not sure if he's still there but I think he is.
  • There's a discussion on one of the other boards about the libraries not accepting books, or taking them and dumping them for lack of space.

I do the informal freecycle thing by leaving a box out when it's not going to rain . . . Barnes and Noble sells used text books, so you could prolly sell them back at their 17th St 5th Ave location in the city.

Housing Works takes books (drag 'em to Crosby St, below Houston)

  • There's also this (if you have any books that fit the bill):
The Sadie Nash Leadership Project is an educational and advocacy
program that provides young women the opportunity to develop as
leaders. Our program is designed to guide young women through a
process in which they come to understand the importance of their
individual life experiences, and how these experiences can be applied
to taking action and making change.

We are currently looking to create a lending library of books for the
young women in our program. We are seeking donations of books that
are either explicitly or implicitly feminist or woman-positive.

Is there a book that changed your perspective on life, or on
womanhood? If so, it is just the book we need in our library! All
types of books are welcome--fiction, non-fiction, poetry, how-to,
etc.--as long as the books help to create positive and empowering
    images of women.

Donations to this project are much appreciated and can be dropped off
at 157 Montague Street, Brooklyn, in a box just inside the door.

If you'd like to donate, but don't have any books you're ready to give
up, we have an Amazon.com wishlist from which you can purchase books
for us. You can find it by searching for "Sadie Nash Leadership
Project" in the Amazon wishlists section.

Books can also be mailed to the following address:
    Sadie Nash Leadership Project
    157 Montague St. 4th floor
    Brooklyn , NY , 11201

We can be contacted at (718) 422-8664 , or [email protected].
  • Salvation Army on Atlantic Avenue.
  • I've donated a bunch of books to the Grand Army Plaza branch over the years. They'll give you a receipt for tax purposes if you need it. If the books are in shoddy shape they may turn them down. I know they also get a ton of old paperbacks; I assume they're grateful for everything but if they had their pick, they would prefer newer books (in condition and publication).
  • My theater company can take them --

We sell them on Amazon and you get a tax receipt for whatever we sell them for.
