does your tap water smell funny?

I live on Washington Ave, between Sterling and St. Johns, and have noticed a funny odor to my tap water the last 2 days. In both the kitchen AND bathroom. It's very hard to describe, not a chemically or toxic smell so much as a bad breath, funky type smell. :?

Anyone else experiencing this??? You can smell it by literally filling your hand or a cup and placing your nose close to the water.

No smell, but my tap water has chunks in it. Little crumbs of orange stuff - probably chipped off from the antique pipes in the building. Yum!

perhaps it is something odd going on with the leaves falling and the not so subtle change of seasons. gen had to close lasr night cuz of main problems.??

yeah, oddly, weve had the stinky water too, but just in the bathroom... started about two months ago, but has sort of let up lately, as far as i can tell.

I did notice a mild odor of rotting vegetable matter once a few days back, but I drank it anyway. I make a habit of drinking whatever comes out of the tap whereever I find myself in the world. I figure that whatever doesn't kill me delays the inevitable.

my cats both seem a bit more sleepy then usual, thought it was the season but perhaps it is the water. one puked last night which is VERY odd. the summer before (?) there was something wrong with the water that only seemed to effect pets. does anyone remember? i just remember my cat getting glassy eyes and sitting strange and then finding out i should have kept up with the news that week. :roll:

My theory: It's fall. We've had some heavy rains and the reservoirs are at 94% capacity (normal = 70%) and some overflowing. Peak time is now for leaf matter in the Catskill/Delaware Watershed, supplying about 98% of our water. They can remove anything microbial with UV and chlorine, but tiny amounts of malodorous compounds (earthy geosmin & MIB, maybe some sulfurous mercaptans) make it through that are otherwise harmless at conceivable levels -- they don't even bother to measure them in the annual report, except that there's numbers for total organic carbon content (and nothing for suflur). A charcoal filter would probably remove them, and letting a pitcher stand overnight in the fridge does wonders.

We can actually get real-time measurements of the supply quality at different stations here.

I can find no warnings about increased microbe levels lately, so I suggest those with sick pets look elsewhere for explanations. The pathogen report says 0 for crytposporidium and 0 for giardia (prior to disinfection) in both Catskill and Delaware systems on Oct 23; we can check again in a couple of days for the new weekly numbers, but if they haven't gone over to daily monitoring it suggests there's no sign of problems.

as far as I can tell my tap water still smells a little funny, but i've noticed it's only cold water, and the odor is only noticeable pretty much immediately after the water has left the tap. Within seconds in a glass the smell subsides, and the water does taste fine. But when rinsing my mouth when i brush my teeth, or doing the dishes, the smell is still there. :?
