CHRIS OWENS FOR CONGRESS UPDATES AND ACTIONS
Racial Profiling and the Danger It Poses
When it comes to protecting our civil liberties, Franklin Roosevelt was on target: We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Topics addressed during a recent meeting within the 11th Congressional District included the assault on individual rights that took place in the aftermath of 9/11 and concerns for our future security. Men were swept off the street and detained for months in isolation and without counsel just because they were born in Pakistan. Various groups have organized to prevent such wrongs from reoccurring. Leading the discussion was a panel that included civil rights attorney Norman Siegel, Congressman Major Owens, and representatives from the Center for Constitutional Rights and the NY Immigration Coalition, amongst others.
The very next day saw newspaper headlines discussing a local politician who is suggesting that racial profiling be made a legal practice and that it should be standard to target Middle Eastern men who, according to this person, all look and dress a certain way. I am speaking out against these prejudices and the manipulation of fear. We must protect ourselves, but in this nation we are innocent until proven guilty; racial profiling means the exact opposite. Racial profiling is also a less than efficient use of our resources. We can protect ourselves by making better use of the systems in place for immigration, better use of technology for detecting bombs and other, more effective resources.
Today, courage means adhering to our Constitution when it is not always convenient to do so. To read my full statement, please go to www.voteowens.com and click on Issues and Current Events.
I urge you to contact your representatives at the City, State and Federal level and let them know that you do not support racial profiling.
A Musical Event for Chris Owens
Please join us this Sunday, August 7, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, for a benefit show at the historic Freddy's Bar, 6th Avenue and Dean Street in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Directions and an Evite link are posted on our website: go to www.voteowens.com and click on Events.
Freddy's is within the footprint of the proposed Ratner arena project and may be destroyed through eminent domain abuse. The potential abuse of eminent domain is one of several reasons why I remain opposed to the proposed Brooklyn Atlantic Yards plan in its current form.
I will be joining Dave Benjoya and the Ole Switcheroo band to perform some original songs. Come drink, give and rock with me! The event is sponsored by Paul Curtis, Ben Smith, and Wayne Brooks. If you cannot attend but would like to make a contribution to support this event, please go to www.voteowens.com for on-line contribution convenience, or send a check to Chris Owens for Congress, 328 Flatbush Avenue #333, Brooklyn NY 11238-4302.
