Is 6th AVE NOISY???

I am considering moving into an apartment on 6th Avenue and President and am wondering whether there is much traffic noise on 6th. The building is on the 4th floor right above the ave. I'm a pretty light sleeper which is why I ask. I appreciate any feedback anyone might have. Thanks!

  • I lived on 6th Avenue and 2nd Street for two years. Our living room was on 6th Avenue, so we did not get the street noise while we tried to sleep. We did get the kids in the backyard talking all night, but that is another story.

In any event, it did get noisy at times, but it was not bad. If your living room is on the avenue side, it is not bad at all. The worst thing that happened would be I would have to rewind my TiVo if a loud motercycle or truck came by while I was watching TV.
  • I live on 6th Ave near 1st St.
Our bedroom is in the back, so we don't get the noise from the avenue, but we had countless guests sleeping on the couch in fron of the living room window and none had any problems.
There are sanitation trucks picking up garbage as early as 7AM on Tuesdays and Fridays. And there are the ocasional fire trucks and ambulances, but otherwise, it is pretty quiet at night and over the weekend.
  • well, if you look at it from the perspective of "it's a relative thing", at least living on 6th ave & president st. is quieter than 7th or 5th!

    good luck...
  • I have lived a lot of places in Brooklyn and one place was 6th Avenue and 7th Street and that was the one place where I NEVER could sleep. I thought it was really noisy. Between the ambulances, the trash collection at 5:45 a.m., the cars being stuck at the light blaring music--it was a nightmare. I actually got more sleep the first year with my newborn twins then I did in that apartment. Maybe it was that particular block (since the fire department was using 7th Street as their detour that year). And anyplace can be quiet if the bedrooms are in the back.
  • I agree that it is all relative. Brooklyn is never quiet. To me that is part of the charm. I live on 5th Ave and I love knowing that regardless of the time of day there is always someone out side on the sidewalk. Like shishkab pointed out, 6th will be much quiter than 5th or 7th, but if you need close to zero street noise you should find an apartment on a "named" street with the bedroom on the rear of the apartment.
  • I lived for years on the east side of 6th ave btw 1st/2nd sts. The bedroom in the back was real quiet, I could sleep w/the windows open. The avenue side did sometimes get a bit noisy w/the occasional motorcycle gunning it. But all in all 6th Ave is a residential street. I'd be happy to live there again.
  • Subject: a lot of people have lived on 6th ave...

so many people have lived on 6th avenue all around the same area! i lived off 6th but not ON 6th so I can't comment but ... I would be curious for apartment leads around there in the future because it's a nice 'avenue.' (i assume everything is still very expensive and the apt. the poster is considering is as well!)
