Emergency Vehicles on 7th — Brooklynian

Emergency Vehicles on 7th

If you heard fire engines, helicopters, police sirenes on 7th Avenue near Flatbush Avenue, don't worry, it is just a small fire at the church at St Johns and 7th Ave. This small fire brought out, it seems, every fire engins and EMS, in the city. This is an over kill!. A perfect way to waste tax payers money.

the helicopter a hundred feet over my apartment already woke me up!
  • Subject: helicopters

I've been trying to find out what was up with the helicopters all morning! It was so loud, I figured it must be something dire, but thanks for the info. Thank goodness.
  • Thanks for the info. I was walking home from the gym this morning and saw all the commotion. 3 helicopters just for a small fire???
  • According to WNYC, it's a 3-alarm (or 4-alarm?) fire at St. Iglesias church on St Johns Place. I believe that's the one on the corner of 7th Ave that also houses the Park Slope Childcare Collective. Sucks to be one of those parents this morning.

So it sounds like a big fire to me, what with all those alarms (and the helicopters waking me up at 6:30 this morning). I haven't been over there to check out the scene myself. It's also probably just getting a lot of attention because it's happening in our wealthy and media-worker-heavy nabe.

I can't swear to this, but from the pictures on the news, it looks like the church that is across the street from the one with the Childcare Collective. There are two or three churches on that corner. The video on NY1 doesn't make the fire look that tiny.

Fire Rips Through Historic Park Slope Church

Firefighters fought a raging blaze for almost two hours Friday morning at a landmark church in Brooklyn.

The three alarm fire started just before 7 a.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church located at 186 St. John's Place near 7th Avenue in Park Slope.

One hundred thirty-eight firefighters used 33 units to fight the fire, which was declared under control at 8:40 a.m.

Nine firefighters were taken to nearby Methodist Hospital on 7th Avenue with minor injuries.
  • It musta been a pretty big fire.
My friend was working deep in the BASEMENT of the Co-op (what, five blocks away?) and they smelled wood burning.

Overkill until it is your apartment on fire. Are you an expert on fire department policy or the response needs of building fires? If not, please do not speak about things you do not know anything about.

    SMACKDOWN!
  • Subject: Well, there was a FDNY TCU truck...

...with a full pontoon boat and a life preserver on it. The Red Cross disaster relief also showed up.

Now, since my 16-month-old lurved-lurved-lurved! seeing all the varieties of firetrucks, it wasn't a waste of my tax dollars :D

    SMACKDOWN!

If you were on the scene this morning and saw the waste of resource – fire trucks, EMS, Helicopters (at lease 3), and police vehicles lined up along Flatbush Avenue, Park Place, 7th Avenue down to Union St, and all the other side Streets, you would have thought the neighborhood was under attack. I thought the number of vehicles were unnecessary. Some of the EMS drivers didn’t know why they were there. My point was that half of these vehicles were not needed. I am part of this community and very sensitive to what happens here. I would not have felt differently If it were my apartment.
  • Better a few too many firetrucks and ambulances than not enough, don't you think? At least the firefighters were at an actual fire rather than double-parked in front of the C-Town. (just kidding, I love firefighters.)
  • people, lighten up.

If there were people inside and not rescued the scream would be 'too little too late'. 'FDNY fails'.

Thankfully, as far as I know, no one was seriously injured.
Good job FDNY and all those who opt to be in the rescue, emergency business.

Now about those tax dollars, let's consider real waste.
  • Oooooh, arguing!

Prospect Heights, we're catching up! WATCH OUT!
  • Subject: Again

I just walked two times by the church where the fire took place today. The first time, nothing was going on. On the second, a few minutes later, a firetruck was parked in Seventh Avenue, firefighters were all over and a number of people - parishioners? - were outside the main entrance, in St. Johns Place, all speaking on their cells. A smell of burning wood was easily perceived.

Anyone knows what is going on?
