new restaurants everywhere!
took a stroll down 7th ave today for the first time in about a month... closed places, new places, under renovation places... i see that "noodles on 7th" is toast... what's the place with the nice etched glass doors? and what's going in next to smiling pizza?

i heard that the place next to smiling pizza is going to be some sort of bakery take-away, but i can't confirm that.
i think the "etched glass" place you're talking about may be NoNo Kitchen (north of new orleans). god i hope the food is authentic -- no offense to Two Boots, but i've been looking for real louisiana cookin' ever since Louisiana Bar & Grill near B'way/Lafayette closed in the 90's.
i'm actually planning on eating there sunday night, so i'll report back if you're interested in getting the scoop. -
Restaurants, stores in general have been opening and closing on 7th Avenue since the late '80's. Restaurants in NYC, in general have a very short shelf life. High rents, mafia shakedowns and mis-management will do that to a business.

well i finally had dinner at watana thai this evening, and it was exceptional.
i recommend the shrimp thing i can't pronouce with baby corn, peppers,. mushrooms,onions, scallions and cashews. and sticky rice. -
i haven't tried watana eat-in, but i did their take-out and wasn't wholly impressed. here in south slope, i order my take-out from tookata thai on PPW -- i love love love their apple salad (got a nice spicy bite to it). but i really like thai food, so i'd be willing to check out watana's eat-in menu and see if there's a difference.

thursday afternoon in midtown i saw a young chinese woman try to shake down
a chinese restaurant by yelling and screaming that the owner was a crook trying
to steal from her and that no-one should do busines with him.
she had been doing this for a week right at the restaurant's busiest time
the owner decided to call the police and the woman left
he said the woman was part of a gang trying to extort protection money
he was worried what the gang was going to do now... -

lol. honestly, i think these places get different chefs daily... the food at tookata used to be really yummy (i thought) but last time i ordered it was inedible. -
Watana was really good when it first opened but it's gotten a bit ordinary since then.

Is this true? Is the mafia really a force in NYC in 2006? I know a few people from the hood back in the day and have been told how powerful they were, but I always wonder if they really do exist any longer.
Also the north portion of 5th ave is exploding with new joints. There is a makeup place (i'm guessing) and a new Asian place where the dollar store was, a new bar/resturant by the hardware store by Bergen St., and a jerk chicken place close to pizzatown.
