Door Renovation

I live on 6th Avenue between 4th and 5th Street and have been looking for a good, reputable painter to refurbish/renovate our old wooden front entrance doors to our building. Basically needs to be stripped, oiled and restained.

Any Suggestions?
What's the average quote to have this done.

  • You could be looking at over a $2000.00 for a good job. These are the big over 8ft doors with detailing correct? They are very hard to strip, especially at the seams where the moulding/ detailing is. You could try Tamer and Tamer on Baltic by 3rd Ave, however, they don't have the greatest stains and oils, there is a guy named Juan Marcos who works with Gardening Services. Call 718 789 1847. Speak with Evelyn, tell her what you want and you're interested in having Juan Marcos do the job. She will either give you the number or set up a meet. Be warned that it will be pricey, but Marcos seems to love his craft, he knows his wood and oils/stains/varnishes.

If you use Tamer you should supply the oils and stain yourself which you can purchase at Abbotts Paints on 42nd between 2nd and 3rd Ave in Sunset Park. Or you can try Rockler Woodworking online. Both have excellent varnishes and stains. Avoid MinWax, they just suck shit.
  • You could try the Park Slope Community Woodstripper, the guy's name is Bob and he has done some stripping for us that we were really happy with. Not sure if he does the staining part, but I think so.

    EDIT: the number is 718-768-2409

Yeah, they're especially bad in combination with water. Tamer made a bathroom cabinet for us a few years ago--the finish was not really waterproof and chipped asily. I had to re-do it. Which is what you'll have to do with your door periodically if it faces south anyway. And a $2000 estimate is about right.

Putting on two-three coats of a top-notch, oil based ,clear marine varnish on top of the finish should remedy that.
