The Daffodil Project started as a 9/11 commemoration. You can get free bulbs to plant in any public space -- parks, or the tree well on your block. You're supposed to sign up in advance, but when I picked mine up last night they said they had extra to give out.

That would be today only, Friday Nov 3, 4-7pm in Prospect Park, at the Litchfield Villa, 5th Street and Prospect Park West.
