This would be a little strange, considering that Barnes & Noble is opening up on the ground floor of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank building, a very short distance away. I suppose it wouldn't be impossible, though.
-
Border's is going to open up in the Williamsburgh Savings Bank building, not B&N so it could be possible.
-
I saw the first half of the list of stores that B&N plans to open in 2007 last week. None of the locations were in Brooklyn.
Perhaps when the second half is released, there'll be a BK location, but for now, no dice.
Too bad. Borders SUCKS. -
Anyone know the ETA of Borders opening?

I seriously hope there's no B&N coming to Myrtle. I left Mall-hattan to avoid this chain store sh*t, not get back into it. Not that we don't need a local bookstore - I just hope a community-minded individual is so inclined before the big boxers come in. just my 2 cents.
-
I hope we get a Barnes and Noble. We sorely lack a good bookshop. And frankly, being realistic, no individual mom pop bookshop is gonna open up and survive.
And to the commenter above. You landed up in the wrong place pal. If you think Manhattan has a lot of "malls" then whats Brooklyn ?? -
If I wanted to be able to walk to Barnes & Noble I'd live in Park Slope. What we need is a funky used bookstore or, if you want Park Slope, how about a radical place w/ coffee like Community Bookstore?
I don't share your cynicism, friend, and am convinced that an interesting, one-of-a-kind place would do well around here. -
i like what i hear from the last post. B&N and Borders, STAY AWAY FROM CLINTON HILL AND FORT GREENE AND BED STUY!!!!!!
-
Not that I disagree, but the comment about Park Slope is ironic to me given the equally vehement opposition to B&N when it first moved in.

I agree that an independant, literary bookstore would be ideal, however they're becoming harder and harder to find. They've been all but eradicated from the suburbs and believe it or not, Manhattan, is pretty much their last refuge. Now that retailers like WalMart are selling more books, B&N and Borders are in danger.

One just opened on Bergen & Flatbush -- Adam's Books -

There's Heights Books on Montague St. and Community Books and BookCourt on Court St. (a few blocks from Atlantic). -
there used to be an independent bookstore in Ft Greene--Indigo Books--but they lost their lease and went internet only.

Bookstores are diicey retail ops because you need a lot of space and you don't actually make a lot of money. So gentrifying hoods where the costs have outstripped the amenities aren't good prospects (isn't that all of Brooklyn by now?) -
they'll end up been below par like all the other nicer retails chains in this nabe..
Howdy, Stranger!
