i dont think hes going to get out of jail anytime soon.
at the very least hes going to be charged with man slaughter.Duke of Flatbush wrote: The back story on the landlord tenant relationship deserves some elaboration. As I understand it, Alan and Nixon did significant work developing the former auto shop as a bar, including soundproofing the entire place. Before development was complete, they left the space for a period of time and in their absence, the landlord, who had concerns that the four load bearing walls wouldn't hold up the building, breached the soundproofing, lengthwise, and installed steel columns and a steel beam to support the buildign. As a result, the highly engineered soundproofing was useless. Moreover, the steel beams apparently would conduct sound up through the brownstone amplifying even the least bit of noise.
I was in there once for a quiet drink, with only a few other customers, there was low-key background music on, which allowed polite conversation, and the cops showed up to notify us of a noise complaint from upstairs. They walked away shaking their heads.
Another time, around 8 pm or so, in similar circumstances, the landlord actually came into the bar, threw his cowboy hat ('fraid so) onto the bar and demanded that the music be turned off.
Draw your own conclusions, but if Calixite gets out of jail, I'd avoid him at all costs. -
Can't say that I was ever inclined to buy the Daily News before seeing this thread, but the writer's response says some horrible things about their journalistic crediblity. Hat's off to Emily for flushing it out into the open.

just found out the man murdered handled the trash for our 3 coop buildings, very interesting to see all the people he interacted with. most of my interaction with him was the the general "hey" when i'd see him on the evening before trash pickup. anyway, very sad to see this happen, and my sympathies go out to his family. i'm hoping my coop can put a collection together for his family, or at the least, i'll contribute at the usual.

That doesn't mean that he won't be out anytime soon. As long as he can post bail or bond then he will be set free until such time that he is remanded to the custody of our correction system. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, the defendant has ties to the community, until recently was well liked and respected in the community, is a property owner, etc...Given those circumstances combined with his age and there is a good possibility that the judge set a reasonable bail/bond amount.
at the very least hes going to be charged with man slaughter.

Even if the bail is set incredibly high he does own valuable property and will most likely be able to secure a bond using the property as collateral. -

right. probably could have had at least three killed. and think of all those court costs that would save! -
Well liked? Bull. The entire street knew he was batshit crazy, and he was actually banned from coming into my shop and bothering my customers, which he tried to do numerous times a day. Calixte has also verbally threatened other people on the block, I recently found out. He was viewed as somewhat obnoxious, if harmless, at least until last week. Damn it.
-
Alright, you got me on him not actually being well liked. I was under the impression that most people in the area liked him. My bad.

I heard that the landlord, who used to be a cop, possibly came into the bar in a police uniform and opened fire.
Was he really in his uniform? I once saw a picture of him in his dress uniform. That dress uniform was like a general's costume. It makes me think pre-meditation... It sounds like he went down there to shake some things up and harrass them one last time! The guy is completely wacko! -
Just did a webcrims search. Calixte was charged with murder, manslaughter and crim poss of a weapon. No bail was set. He appears again in court on December 14th.
-
So if he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, does that mean it was unregistered? Are you an ex {or current} cop?

I think it really depends on what degee you are charged (i.e., 2nd, 3rd, 4th) a 4th degree is treated as a misdemeanor. Im not 100% sure but I think one of the qualifications for 4th degree is that you are not fit to carry a firearm so even if he was carrying a registered firearm by using it to commit manslaughter you are "not fit to carry a gun" and are thus charged with the crime of criminal possession of a weapon. -
The response (below) from the Daily News reporter is a disappointing cop-out. It's the duty of a journalist to advocate for the truth and if that fails then, at a MINIMUM, take your name off the story. Blaming your editor is just bullshit and in many ways very unfair to that person. Yes, editors have the final say on copy, but it's the responsibility of reporters to make sure their reportage is accurate when finally printed.
Either way, nice work 'Ms. M.' extracting a response out of the News reporter.
Dear Ms. M-----,
I didn't write an article sympathetic to the gunman. My editor did.
I talked to people in the neighborhood who had knowledge of the business
dispute. I talked with neighbors who described Calixte as "a nut."
Some of both elements were featured in the story. Unfortunately, most
of both points of view were edited out. Space is a tyrant in the
newspaper business.
Next time, we'll try to do better.
Best, kerry b. -

hmmm i think registered or not, he's not allowed to take it outside his home, but i wonder if matters he owns the building? -
wow - its funny to hear the other side of people....
I knew of Calixte from Community board stuff - he's one of those people who always made me scratch my head and wonder how he ever got appointed...
when we did testimony about Atlantic Yards at the community board level last summer, he was the one speaker who had no discernible position. Everyone else was pro yards, anti yards, or advocating the importance of one aspect of the question. He instead told us all about love, God's love, love for fellow man, etc, and seemed rather satisifed with himself. Of course he was absolutely unaware that he had wasted our time, and by rambling on had kept someone with legitimate concerns from speaking... -
just out of curiosity--what were the racial backgrounds of all involved--alan henry, calixte, and the guy shot. I am guessing that they were all black, and that Calixte is possibly Haitian? But the "cowboy hat" reference kind of throws me off. Does anybody know? I was just wondering, also, how that might have played into the Daily News coverage, since white shooters tend to get more sympathy from the NYC media--but then again, maybe being a landlord trumps race?

alan is actually alain. he and his brother are haitian. -
George Martin was a great guy. Always in a good mood whenever I saw him. He was hard working and had a family. Fuck that bar, fuck the bible thumping owner that killed him. I hope he rots in jail. George Martin always helped me whenever I needed help moving things or whatever. He will be missed.
