Park Place between Nostrand and New York — Brooklynian

Park Place between Nostrand and New York

I am about to sign a lease for a beautiful apartment on Park Place. The block is lovely as is the building. I have a dog and we walk a lot. What are your thoughts on this area? As we won't have access to the backyard, we will be making the late night walk to Brower park or Atlantic Avenue. How safe do you think this is?

Thanks for any advice you have.

  • First let me say welcome to the block. I walk a bit at night and tend to go up to New York. Nostrand has more activity, but not all of it is positive. New York feels safer to me, even though there is less traffic. Nostrand does however have some business that stay open very late including a couple of Korean grocers and a few bodegas. I will do Nostrand until about midnight, but not after that.

There was a bit of discussion here a while ago about the relative safety (or lack thereof) of Brower, but nothing in months so I'd say you need to make the walk once and see how you feel. I have friends who live on Park just off Brooklyn and they say its not bad, so see for yourself.

Another option is to walk up to Eastern Parkway and then go up or down Eastern Parkway. When I take a late night stroll that usually is my choice. The parkway has traffic and the medians tend to be better lit than the sidewalk closer to the service road.
  • Brower Park does seem to be a safer option than Lincoln Terrace Park but keep in mind that NYC Parks close at dark or dusk and you could get a summons or arrested for violating park rules.

As for the area of Nostrand and Park...If you think back to the Labor Day weekend you'll remember a shooting incident that occured there in which several people were shot and one person was killed. Several firearms were recovered from the scene. That is also the area in which a woman was shot during an argument on the street involving her son and another person; that incident was a couple months earlier. For a long time there was a police command post on that corner in an attempt to combat some of the crime in the area. Keep in mind that there has to be a significant amount of crime in one location for the NYPD to dedicate one of those command posts and personell on a 24 basis for months at a time.
  • welcome. always be aware of your surroundings, I prefer New york ave when traveling late, Nostrand has more going on. which means more activities and more people.
  • Quality of life is good for us over here on Park Place bet New York and Brooklyn. The neighbors are great. We have met people who live on your block too. (hi Homeowner!) There's a great sense of community. It ain't Brooklyn Heights, but every place has its problems, and we're working to improve our neighborhood. Brower Park is popular with the dog owners on my block and yours. Hope to see you passing by.
  • BTW, the head of the block association is a guy by the name of Al Shepard. Al is a great guy, has lived on the block for many years, and is a former business owner on Nostrand Ave. Al's very active in the neighborhood and in trying to attract more businesses to Nostrand. If you get active here you might run into him at the Community Board meetings or the precinct council meetings.
