  • Roma's Grandma pizza is pretty good for a quick slice. I agree that Smiler's on 9th is reliable. Whatever anyone might say about "fancy" pizza joints, La Villa is like crack... I just keep going back for more (even though I cry every time I look at that hideous Commerce Bank next door).
  • The pizza at Anthony's, newly opened on Seventh between 14th and 15th, is pretty good -- a notch above La Villa to my mind, and I like La Villa.

plus they have cheeseLESS slices, yumyumyum.

excuse me if i'm being an idiot ... but this is something that has been floating around in my brain for years ... so, doesn't the absence of 'cheese' make 'pizza' no longer pizza, or something other than pizza?

    :?

actually, pizza in italy is usaually without cheese. or if there is cheese, there is just a wee bit. like, cheese does not make the pizza, you know?

I see. Thank you for setting me straight on that ...

I love Anthony's. Anthony's existence has made my life better.

On the other hand, I had such a bad experience at La Villa that I don't think I will ever go back. Ever.

The pizza at La Villa is consistently excellent; the service every time I visit is incompetent or worse. So now I only order delivery.

Pizza Plus on 7th Avenue between 10th and 11th is my favorite. Good old fashioned pizza with fresh ingredients and the perfect crust--not too hard, not too soft.
  • There was a pizza place on 5th somewhere near SouthPaw that cooked sesame seeds into their crust. Does anyone know which place this is? I miss it! And can not find it any more.....
  • I went to Anthony's this weekend. Aside from having run out of 4 or 5 things on the menu (and not having a liquor license), the experience was great! The pizza was delicious - more rustic and homemade than La Villa... the perfect blend of fresh mozz and tomato on the Margherita. Our white pizza, however, was a bit goopy.

it used to be on the same block as southpaw. on the corner. this older eastern european couple owned it. the sesame seeds and the semolina crust made for a great cheap slice. I think the place got bought out by an Ecuadorean family, or the owner of Los Pollitos bought it -- in any case, it's now an italian pasta place. bleh

if you want to try the best pizza in brooklyn. go to Peperoncino. on the corner of 5th + St. Mark's Place. oven baked pizza. salivaticious

    best pizza in brooklyn.

    FACT
  • For what it's worth, New York Magazine's Adam Platt listed the city's "Top 100" restaurants in the city and included Franny's (for the pizza, which he says is amazing) in the list. It was towards the end of the list ... but it was there nonethless.

I've not been there ... so I can't really have an opinion on that. (Franny's IS in Park Slope, right ??) ....

    ('')

omigod, we thought Peperoncino was the WORST! We tried pizza and some other apps and salad there . . . expensive without being at all delicious. Hate that!

La Villa does nice takeout pies, and one day I'm going to Franny's . . . which is in PH not PS, yes?

and that Anthony's place in the south slope sounds great. Pizza lovers are qveling all over the slope.

    that's where you went wrong!!!

Peperoncino makes the greatest pizza in brooklyn! their apps and salads are quite another thing.

Try it again, next time, but just order the pizza :)

    no, we had pizza. bleech.
it's one of those places with fifty million things on the menu that must be festering in a freezer in basement. masquerading as a fresh ingredient kind of Franny's joint. I repeat
    BLEECH!
  • Subject: Vero!

I've been in the Slope for ten years - have tried EVERY pizza joint, and I have to say that my new absolute favorite is VERO - on 5th Ave between 7th and 8th. Nothing fancy - $1.75 slices and sodas, but it's nearly perfect NYC pie - and their pasta dishes are really excellent too.

No - sorry! Franny's is Prospect Heights. Flatbush is the border. If it were on the other side of Flatbush, it would be in Park Slope. (Let the flaming begin).
  • Peperoncino is amazing food-been there a bunch of times and brought 6 different people there who also loved it-I think people on this board just like to bitch and moan about everything in the world

    SIX different people! my goodness!

seriously, good luck getting your place into shape

  • Yeah-again I have to say what a bunch of nasty whiney people there are on this board-every post I read is someone putting down something in the neighborhood or just generally bitching and moaning about something. sheesh-I hope i never run into any of you around the neighbrohood-what a miserable bunch you must be

Joe's on 5th Ave btw 12/13 (or maybe it's 11/12)....the regular beats the Sicilian, and has a great thin crust. Not too sweet (like the scary Princess Pizza on 5th and 14th).

    yea. joe's!

it's a blue collar unassuming slice

a slab of sauce and chewy cheese on a toasted thin'ish crust

the cheese at joe's is ok, but there is one pizza cheese i've had that is orgasmic

last time i had it -- was in a bronx pizzeria in the 70's

it makes me cry just to reminisce about this cheese

this cheese was white and saffron,
with olive oil swimming in these tiny rivers.
you could make 3 foot long strings of cheese
and then have it snap and smack you in the eye when it broke
you just wanna spoon with this cheese

    and it smelled.
    so
    good

    i am crying now...
  • My old standby was Pinos La Forchetta, then I got hooked into Joes because they stay open past last call. Along the way a few other places were tried, Lennys, La Villa, Franny's, Tomato and Basil. In the end, I've come back to Pinos - large tasty pies, fast car-based delivery, and good value.

oh. i also like joe's because they have an outdoor window, which you can eat your slice at.

food is about the ambiance too
