Subject: A real Topic!

Finally a topic that the new Park Slope can rally behind. Forget
anti-war demonstrations, affordable housing, universal health
insurance! Those are the quaint causes of a generation ago....we have
stylish kids who have been mercilessly attacked by an outsider. We must
stick together and defend our patagonian clad, oililly wearing real
estate quoting children from the brutal comment of being labeled,
indulged!! Indulged! Where on earth did this interloper come up with
the idea that Park Slope children are indulged! ?That kind of dangerous
talk must be stopped in its tracks and it is up to us to defend our
god given rights as consumers to continue our love affair with
"quality" . We would never be caught in Wal-mart where middle class
materialistic America shops. No our Ipod wearing offspring are only
clad in the finest European imports which are then lovingly passed down
as heirlooms for generations to come.

Wow - I've been skipping over this post for weeks and just realized what a gold mine I was missing.

I honestly can't believe that so many pixels have been wasted on this conversation. I mean, backing up to the original post: kids wearing clothes from an environmentally-responsible company eating cookies and hot chocolate in a locally-owned shop? That's what has this board all up in arms?

Good lord, you'd rather them be in Old Navy and eating Dolly Madison snack cakes? Wearing hemp and eating raw-food treats at home? I don't understand what the issue is here. i don't even get the issue if the kids were wearing Gucci coats and drinking the special $100 gold-leaf latte. Ok, maybe that would be a little excessive, but c'mon.

this is amusing and ridiculous. Although I have to say, i cannot understand how seeing a bunch of well groomed kids on the street could conjure so much spite and anger from a grown woman.

The bottom line is that if I have the money, it's my money and i should be able to dress my kids the way I want. If that means walmart or prada, that's my choice and anyone who is personally affected by that should seek help. Seriously, are you sure this isn't about the bitter youngest child syndrome of the kid who never got anything but hand me downs?

And for the record, I think the stores on 7th avenue are awesome and they serve the neighborhood - if not they would be out of business - imagine the rents. I'd rather see kids in clothes that fit and look good than kids in baggy, dirty clothes and greasy hair.

If you don't like the slope and think it's some sort of affluent cookie cutter neighborhood, then move out and stop bitching about the rents and the people. You obviously don't belong here.

Perhaps you should go somewhere where kids are getting shot at and strung out on drugs and you can go complain to their parents for not dressing them well enough.

Soundtracks, the cool little cd store that was forced out by those crazy rising rents, or any of the other interesting small modestly successful biz that have moved on.

I'm sure we all have out pet favorites that have bitten the dust.

As a former Sloper, now residing in tony East New York, I see that there are a lot of folks with plenty of free time on their hands. Hehe. Myself included. Imagine, being able to walk outside of one's brownstone (even if you don't own it) and stroll to the corner for the opportunity to purchase a fabulous hot chocolate and a cookie that -- sure -- costs almost a sawbuck.

This is NY people, where a $20 is commonly referred to as a NY single. A lot of us came here to make that filthy dollar bill. A lot of us are just trying to make a better life for ourselves and our kids. Since when did it become a crime to want better for your kids than you may have experienced?

More to the point, since when have a person's ethics been attached to his or her bank account? The measure of a person is his or her character, not whether or not this person purchases something that he or she can afford.

I imagine every one of you is posting from some comfy cubicle (on your employer's dime) or from the cozy nest that is your home, or from -- gasp -- a cafe that serves that really expensive coffee. So, without pointing any fingers, except the one I'm pointing at myself (sitting here in my home office using my PC), seems to me we're all just a little bit coddled.
