Supermarkets — Brooklynian

Supermarkets

Can anyone recommend good supermarkets within walking distance of the Newkirk Plaza area? I just want to know we don't have to rely solely on our weekly trip to Fairway Brooklyn.

  • Cortelyou Road and E.16th has a fairly clean and decent Associated Supermarket, Coney Island Ave between Cortelyou ROad and Ave C is C Town :)
  • I agree with Rala. I lived over there for nearly 3 years and did most of my shopping at that Associated. They have a nice neighborhoody feel-- chatty cashiers and guy who sings pop songs as he stocks the shelves, etc. Over time they've seemed to get better and better and carry a nicer selection of produce and other products. The Flatbush Food Co-op across the way is great for health food and specialty items. But I wasn't too keen on C-Town. There was often a rotten odor coming from the doors to the back-room.
  • Try the Shoprite on Ave I, just west of McDonald Ave. This is probably a little bit further from you than the others mentioned, but IMO is far better. (Though the C Town on CIA was recently renovated, it may be better now). Shoprite is huge, has parking, and is open 24 hours. I would not buy anything that isn't pre-packaged at the Cortelyou Associated. That place has the peculiar NYC Supermarket Funk smell. I don't know where it comes from, but I like to avoid it. (The Key Food on Wash Ave in Prospect Heights had the same smell.)
  • I think that Associated has a better selection of fruits and vegetables and C Town has better meat,,,too bad we can't combine them,I was in C Town today and the loose onions were rotten to the point that they were almost liquid looking, but their meat is good,,,go figure!!
  • Thing is, I can't find a simple herb liek Rosemary unless I go to the flatbush food co-op, IMO all the supermarkets have their faults, none really has that good a fruit/vegetables, I have often seen wilted lettuce on display. The meats ain't that good either, although C town down have a better selection and they do sell fish.

For fruits/vegetables, if you have a car, go to the market at the cornerof Church ave and I think it's E. 4th st. They kick ass! Better prices then Fairway! And there is a Polish deli just a few stores down that beats Eagle Provisions! They make their own soups, stuffed cabbage and more!
  • on church i do believe its called the golden something or another and yes its a very interesting store
  • I have to agree with JKG about the Shop Rite on Ave I. It's a huge store with lots of variety, open 24/7. Love shopping there.

Since the original poster asked about shopping near Newkirk Plaza (although that was a while ago), I thought I'd mention that there are a couple of so-so shopping options right near there. There's a mid-sized C-Town one block from Newkirk Plaza (on E 16th between Foster & Newkirk), although I don't think the food is the best of quality. There's also a really small Keyfood on Foster around E 14th, I think? Not much choice of food but I often stop there to pick something up because it's near the subway.

The other supermarket I know of is the Met Foodmarket on 18th Ave around E 4th, I haven't shopped there myself but it seems to be a decently sized store.
  • There used to be a Waldbaum's on Nostrand between I and J when I was growing up. I think it's a C-Town now.
