YOU CANT COME TO WHERE SOMEONE ALREADY LIVES AND CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOUR. HELLOOOO??? Are they supposed to change their life 'cause now the big and almight "anonymous" has moved to the block and she doesn't like people hangin out?
Unless you are being attacked, physically, LET IT GO!

If it bothers you so goddamn much, MOVE!
I agree with you on one level, but I also see the other side of the coin. For example, if you are used to hanging out on the stoop of a house because the house was empty and no one lived there so you weren't hassled I can understand that. But if the house is purchased and the owner moves in, I think he/she absolutely has the right to then expect that you would change your behavior and not hang out there.

I think the right thing to do is go outside and simply ask if the game can be moved. Come up with some excuse "My mom's is coming through and she's real religious and if she sees you out here gambling she's going to come over and start preaching to you and me. Can y'all move up the block?"

It may sound ridiculous but sometimes it works. I was on a conference call one night for work with these folks from Australia when a car pulled up with the bass booming. I couldn't go into another room since I needed to use my computer, so I put my phone on mute, ran outside and said I was on an oversees conference call and couldn't hear. The guy was like "No prob." End of story.

Sometimes you can let it go, sometimes you can't but you shouldn't expect to have to let it go and you should only call the cops if asking doesn't work.

Yes, absolutely. The poster said "newt door to my house"..Hence my answer.
I absolutely agree. I live in an appartmet building and my neighbor has a nineteen year old son. I remember him when he was NINE, and he seems to be the coolest boy on the block. Handsome too. There are always people in my stair case hangin out and girls looking for him, and I really do mean always. Sometimes it bothers me and sometimes not. When they smoke there and leave big chunks of tobacco behind, I get pissed off. BUT I TALK to him! I don't call the cops.
If you read a previous post I actually suggested the same thing ou just did. Go outside, introduce yourself, say you're having guests or something and ask them to move up the block. They will. They're humans, not cattle. They do understand words. Most of the guys also have a built in respec towards people that are older than them, especially if they re being respectful. At least in my experience.

HOWEVER, if you constantly call the cops on these guys that probably already are being harrased for nothing, they are bound to see you as an enemy and you won't get anywhere. Agree?
  • Wjhat if an hasid was standing on the corner, loitering, and asked you if you were Jewish a few times? Would you call the cops on him?

What if kids were on big wheels riding up and own the street being loud as hell and playing, do they deserve a summons?

All of this shit and assumptions about these men being dealers, muggers, etc is disturbing. I'm not walking through life with blinders on at all, but it is frustrating that everything someone does on the street is perceived as a threat. It is unjust.

Let people do whatever they do. These guys were obviously not doing anything to be malicious, and a holiday just passed for Chrissake.

I wonder if the poster was just embarrassed to show mommy and daddy her place in Brooklyn that she may have said was 'kinda close" to Park Slope. I wonder what the circumstances were to make our poster so angry.

Perhaps a game of chess, which can also be animated and loud, would be a more appropriate for a Thanksgiving activity. Would the disdain be there then?

Only if they were playing speed chess. The guys that play that game are a bunch of ne'er-do-wells.
  • "Y'know the problem with ne'er do wells, don't you? They ne'er do well."
  • CARNIVOIRE

You cant really be serious?? Do you actually believe that there are people that never do well?
What, is that only for people that play dice, or does is poker included in you analogy? or is it because they do it outside? Maybe they arent as privilegied as you are, or have a different culture. Is tat perhaps the reason. GOD you piss me off with ignorant remarks like that.

keeping my fingers crossed that this was said as a joke.
  • Hey Tamara,

I believe Carnivore's "ne'er do well" was in reference to the non-existent speed chess players.

Snapping to his subtly sardonic remark, I was merely quoting Cary Grant in "Arsenic and Old Lace."

    Hope that helps.
  • am fairly certain Carnivore was referencing this thread:

and not commenting on whether or not dice, craps, chess, or poker players do well.
  • dice games are illegal. Call The Damn COPS. Its as simple as that.
  • There is a community meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at Bedford Central Presbyterian Church on the corner of Dean St. and Nostrand Ave. You should bring up your concerned at the meeting.
  • The original post in this thread is officially the most bizarre post I've ever read on Dailyheights
  • I think "guest" should join us to further communicate his/her unhappiness with games on the street.

If Saturday is still pleasant, I'm gonna bring out some chairs to the front of my building and play a game of Monopoly. Is anyone down with that? Say 2 p.m.?

Maybe they were playing Yatzee. Is that ok?

you should play Monopoly with Carnivore and Mrs. C. they are evil and the devil. when they play that game, I mean.

No. Albert Einstein, who was always right, said "God does not play dice". And if God doesn't do it, neither should you.

Albert Einstein, no fundamentalist he, would prefer you not take a literal interpretation of His Words.

  • Thanks for clarifying, my preassure went up there and I had to take a break from the board.. not too long a break, but still. Maybe it's the Latina in me. temper, temper, as they say.

Really? What part of the bible is that from?
  • OP's post is riciculous. But some of the responses are even more ridiculous.

I saw a bunch of guys playing dominoes on St. Marks ave in Park Slope the other night. Guess I shoulda called the cops.

Several posters have referenced so and so part of the penal code prohibiting dice if money is exchanged. You didn't grow up playing dice and it's not part of your culture. But, you'll use any excuse to get these guys off the street. These guys aren't the same as the piranha card dealers trying to scam people. They're playing a game amongst themselves. I don't play (throw) dice, but if I did I sure wouldn't want the cops harassing me for it. Is it valid to make the assumption that EVERY dice thrower is a drug dealer or degenerate?

You are heading down a real slippery slope if you think calling the cops on everyone you find unsavory is the solution to your so called problems.
  • Funny thing I just noticed regarding these so called vagrants..

I drop my kids off everydat at school in Park Slope, and there's always this homeless guy asking for money at the 7th avenue train station. Also, when I came home last night it hit me.. the only "vagrant" in my neighborhood that ever asks me for money is....wait! white.

Just some trivia I thought I might share.
  • What does the race of the panhandler have to do with anything? There are "Vagrants" of all different ethnicities in front of every grocery store on 7 ave, and they are just as annoying as the rest of them. I've also never seen a money free dice game before and I have seen several dice games end in gunfire. Its more common then you would think. Why is illegal street gambling acceptable? Who wants to see a group of thugs hanging out, blocking the sidewalk shooting dice for hours at a time? Not the environment i want for my kids!
  • I am the original poster. Number one none of the men shooting dice lived on my block. They definitely were exchanging money. Yes, I am new to the neighhborhood 2 years and I am black. I have a few questions for you. Once the dice game turns into a brawl then can I call the police? Its happened before. How long should I keep my head in the sand? Why can't I try and do something to improve my quality of life? I don't allow my two teenage boys to loiter why should allow anyone else. Change has to start somewhere and by ignoring the problem its not going to solve anything.
  • Its funny how the stop snitching folks never want to identify themselves. Perhaps because they're shook?

I learnt this excellent dice game in Scandinavia called Maja; it's so popular there that every bar has dice and cups available. It'd be great if it caught on here. It's money free, no weapons required, and my stoop is available if anyone wants to come round and play. People who might look to some like thugs are welcome (presuming they're not looking for a fight). I'm sure the kids in the building and in the playground nearby won't mind.
