    I think part of the problem is the anonymity of the online world. It's a problems that has existed since day one on the Internet.

    Sad but true.

    And what's sadder is people seem overfocused on the novelty of someone taking a camera phone photo rather than the weight of the event itself.

    Before the thread was removed from Flickr, I think you'll find that several people did actually attempt to bring to the attention of the mob that if they had the wrong person, they were making a terrible mistake.

    Of course the message was lost amongst the whitenoise generated by idiots saying genuinely nasty things that you've already mentioned, and the mob hollering for a head on a platter.
