Apt. work without a building permit...risks? — Brooklynian

Apt. work without a building permit...risks?

Some work was done in my apartment (2 rooms added to what was an otherwise open space) without a building permit before I moved in. It seems to all be up to code. But now I want to add a 3rd room (2 walls basically) and want to know if anyone has done this? Will I get slammed with a huge fine if I file for a permit this time and they find out about the old work?

Does anyone know a web site that might address this kind of situation, OTHER than DOB (which has the worst search function ever)?

Many thanks for any suggestions.

  • IF you can work this as "home improvement" or a "minor alteration," you are prob. fine with no permits. However, if it affects any bearing walls or any major electrical work, I'd pull permits to be safe.

What was done in the past in none of your concern, assuming it's up to code ;)

Ask at the brownstoner.com forum. I've seen variations on this question there before.
