upholstery question... — Brooklynian

upholstery question...

hi.

i am about to do a very i-must-be-a-grownup-now, thing, and am interested in getting my couch upholstered....but i dont know the first thing about it!

first, are there any places in the neighborhood, or surrounding hoods that would do this?

also, when this happens, does the company come and pick up the couch, or do you have to arrange to drop and pick it up yourself?

if anyone has been through this lately, will you share your experiences... what to look out for... if anyone could do it in pph, or slope, etc area...?

thanks in advance! i need all of the advice that i can get!

  • I'll be interested in the info too.
  • This was the subject of a thread on the PS board over the summer, I think...
  • I'd look on Apartment Therapy, or post on their open threads

  • I've always wondered if it's worth the cost? Isn't it sometimes as expensive as a new couch?
  • depending on the cost of the couch . . .

if you have something that you like, that is solid, you might as well have it re-upholstered. Slip-covers and re-upholstery are almost the same $$.

There's a place on Seventh Ave close to LA Taqueria, and another larger store on Fifth Ave near 3rd St, both in the Slope. Those both look very traditional.

There used to be a woman named Patty in Red Hook that was more in the mid-c modern mode, but I don't know if she's still there . . . she used to have a groovy retro furniture shop on Lafayette just below Houston . . . she was awesome - I'd like to know if she's still in biz.
  • I had several pieces reupholstered this past year. I bought the fabrics at Mood and had the upholstering done by an excellent local craftsman. His shop is Mr. Wood located on Pacific Street behind the Modell's. He's a super nice guy and truly a first-rate upholsterer. Highly recommended!!!

Prices vary based on size, but it's not necessarily cheaper than buying something new. However, it's hard to find updated furniture at a reasonable price that is high quality (e.g., Pottery Barn, etc. look okay but the frames are usually cheap plywood)
  • ooo thank you so much, ana.log!

one more question. like i said, i have a BIG ole vintage couch. i love it enough to pay to get it redone, rather than buy a new one. but, alas, it's just me... so would i need to get a mover or something to take it over to him, or does the upholster-er-er have a pickup/drop off service...?

either way, i know ill have to pay an arm and leg to get it out of my place.
  • he picks up and drops off!
  • he didn't charge me for the picking up and dropping off either

Yes, she used to do the work for Barry Jetter at General Nitemare on COlumbia St which was the coolest mid-century store ever. I miss him. His business card I still keep in my wallet - it reads "send lawyers guns and money, the shit has hit the fan". he passed away, what last year? 2 years ago? but 2 other very nice men took over and I bet you could find Patty through them. 196 columbia st

Patty did a couch for me from Barry's store.
