thinking of moving to prospect heights...

timmy
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
2 friends and i are looking for a place to rent and considering prospect heights. the place we're looking at is at lincoln place and underhill ave.

it seems like a beautiful area with reasonable prices, but i haven't spent too much time there and am wondering what your thoughts on the area as a whole are and these blocks in particular. i visited a friend once and walking a few blocks in the wrong direction it got very scary.

i suppose i'm mostly asking about if there is interesting nightlife and also SAFE nightlife, but any thoughts you can give will be very helpful.

thanks,
tim

  • The area is nice except I prefer not to walk down Lincoln Place at night by myself.

it can get a little shaddy over there but its not too bad.
the further east you go on lincoln the crapier it gets.

cool thing is you would be practically across the street from prospect park, the library the museam and the botanical gardens. doesnt seem like much in the winter but when spring rolls around it will seem like paradise.

as for night life im afraid there isnt much. there are 1 or two pretty good bars on underhill. there is soda and beast on vanderbilt and if you dont mind walking a few blocks there are a bunch of cool spost on 5th ave in park slope.

id say if you dont mind the ocasional gun shot go for it.

  • I live in the middle of the Washington <-> Underhill block, and I like it a lot. I disagree that it gets crappy further east, though -- I actually feel safer walking from Washington to my building than from Underhill. But to give you some sense of the safety level, I regularly walk home from the E Pkwy 2/3 at 1 or 2 AM, and my wife walks to the subway at 4:30AM for work, and neither of us has had any issues.

    Three things, though:

    - I'd make sure to visit the Underhill & Lincoln area at night, since it can feel kind of desolate at times.
    - The Lincoln Place block party during the summer is LOUD, and I come from the country that gave New York the West Indian Day Parade.
    - The nightlife pickings are kind of slim, but Sepia isn't bad (though kind of pricey for the area).

That said, you are close to the park, the library, GAP, and the gardens, all of which make this my favourite corner of the nabe.
  • You're right next to cheryl's and sepia - in the summers there's first saturday at the Brooklyn Museum, the park is literally around the corner, and you a short walk to Park Slope. Not sure what "safe" nightlife means, but it's not like there are running gun battles down the block (well, ok, there was one last week, but it's a long block) :-)
  • RE Lincoln Place block party: Because the yuppie co op on Eastern Parkway put up a "NO LOUD MUSIC" sign on their "rear end" facing Lincoln Pl, the usual spot for the block party dj speakers, they set up the sound system right under my apt this past summer. I complained about it to the community board because it made it impossible for me to remain in my own home. I should not have to give up my right to enjoy my own space for a loud ass, bargain basement, bootleg block party. I have lived here for 30 years and endured quite a few block parties in my time but they never parked the sound system in front of my building before. The people setting up called me a bitch and ordered me to go upstairs because I said something to them about it.

the block party was suspended for several years during the late 80s and 90s due to drug mayhem. It may be time to suspend it for good if it interferes with people's life and work in their own space, and fosters incivility against ones neighbours. I finally had to go to my son's house in Queens. and I lost a precious weekend afternoon for writing and photoshopping. To be cussed at, and turfed out of my own place..that sucks.

It sure seems like a lot of board newbies are posting in this thread =] Either that or a bunch of lurkers.
