I think your best best in the nabe is Polish Nail Salon on 5th, or the ritzier (and definitely cleanlier) D'mai Spa (I know I'm always plugging them - I've only been there once!) also on 5th.

Why are there so many manicurists from Poland? :P  -
actually, they're Korean, as are the majority of manicurists in NYC

A nail salon had opened up around the corner from my old apartment called "Polish- a nail spa."
The sign was done really badly though, with the letters poorly spaced. At a quick glance, it looked like the place was called "Polish anal spa."
I was never really sure what those Poles did in there.

Somewhat unrelated, but you reminded me: On Tuesday night, there was a hand-chalked specials sign outside the restaurant next to Natural Land that looked exactly like it said "Chicken Porn"...on BOTH sides. I was wishing for a camera (or the ability to download pics off my phone).
More related: I have in fact encountered a lot of Polish manicurists. Just sayin'. -
I go to that nail salon on 7th ave every once in a while. I think its called Nails on Seventh. It seems clean especially in comparison to the other places around here. They do a good job. I'd suggest bringing your own tools if to any nail place if you don't feel comfortable.

Ditto. It's about 3 doors from the SE corner of Union and 7th, upstairs. I'm pretty sure they sprinkle something in the foot tubs between customers. I don't know if that's your idea of sterile, but it is an improvement over some of theother places. You will also need to remind them to use a freshly autoclaved set of tools. Or, yeah, bring your own.
It's a zoo on weekends. -
I go to Plaza Nails on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights. It is very clean and efficient. Nice selection of nail polishes also.
