does anyone know what happened at the farmer's market today around 5pm? i got off the Q train and my normal exit (north west by the starbucks) was closed off and it was a scene that seemed similar to ripple after the shots the other night. just curious, hopefully it wasn't that bad. all i saw were people looking horrified, lots and lots of cops, and a section of the farmers market blocked off with that yellow police tape.

Two Men Stabbed In Union Square, One Critically
    December 06, 2006

Two men were stabbed and another injured with a blunt trauma to the head Wednesday afternoon in Union Square.

Police responded to a 911 call at Union Square West and East 17th Street Wednesday to find two 17-year-old males stabbed, and another with a head injury. One of the males was stabbed in the chest and is in critical condition at St. Vincent's Hospital. The other two victims, one of whom, according to police, was stabbed multiple times in the back, are in stable condition at St. Vincent's.

According to police, the suspect took off by foot, and no arrests have been made yet. The investigation is ongoing.
  • Shit - is that what happened? I was there for the pregame show. I went in to MickeyD's for a little hot fudge sundae action, and there were two groups of 7-10 kids facing each other across the street, one group directly in front of McD's the other 15 feet away on the small island with their backs to one of the farmer's market trucks. When I walked in, all of the kids were millin' around - I assumed that school had just gotten out. When I walked out a few minutes later, tensions were definitely higher, and some of the hot-headed kids were yelling at each other from across the street, while others in the group tried to quiet them down and play peace keeper. As I was walking off, I actually thought to myself, "let's hope the cops come by soon." I was thinking of it as more of a nuisance, not a dangerous situation - I guess that it escalated to yet another level after I had left...

    Union Square melee kills teen

'You saw hands and fists flying'

Teen is questioned by cops after melee in Union Square that left one teen dead and sent two others to the hospital. The fight involved up to 50 youths.

Taishawn Bellevue was killed in the melee.

Teen is distraught after deadly mayhem, which may have stemmed from dispute at school near Union Square.

A pack of hooligans - clutching bats, belts, knives and planks of wood - killed a teen at the farmers market in Union Square yesterday, sending holiday shoppers ducking for cover behind tables of cookies and Christmas trees.

"You saw hands and fists flying. One girl with a burgundy coat was beating someone with a cane," said Derwin Hannah, 43, a book vendor. "It went down like 'The Warriors' [movie].

"Innocent people were locked in against the tables."

Taishawn Bellevue, 17, of Brooklyn, an avid basketball player, was stabbed to death and two other teens were injured during the 3:45 p.m. brawl, police and relatives said.

As many as 50 youths took part in the melee, which sources said might have stemmed from a dispute at nearby Washington Irving High School.

Hannah said he knew trouble was brewing when young people started gathering in packs at a McDonald's on the west side of the park. "Every couple of minutes, more and more would come," he said.

Then they inexplicably stormed the peaceful market.

"I suddenly saw a bunch of kids. One had a belt with the metal side out," said Laura Chipley, 30, a shopper from Brooklyn. "I saw a guy with a piece of wood. He was using it like a bat. It was a wild melee.

"Then they got closer to me, and I got out the way."

Taishawn, Glenwood Nobles, 17, and a teen identified as Carlos Tejada were rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan, where Taishawn died. Glenwood was in stable condition there with six stab wounds to his back. Carlos was treated for a gash on his head and released.

"He was a good kid, honestly," said Taishawn's mother, Michelle Bellevue. "As a child, he was very loving, very affectionate. He never complained, even if you told him he couldn't do something. He just accepted it and went with the flow.

"And he loved basketball. That was his thing."

Taishawn had played on the Junior Knicks last summer, his stoic mom said. His goal was to play basketball at the University of Connecticut or Maryland.

"He wasn't really an outside kid," she said. "He never did the parties."

Taishawn, who at only 5-feet-7 was able to dunk a basketball, attended Science Skills Center high school in Brooklyn and played for the Brooklyn Rams of the Amateur Athletic Union basketball program, said his coach, Reginald Murray.

"He's not a troubled kid. He's a good kid. People always say that, but he's a straight baller," Murray said.

Taishawn, who lived with his mom in Flatbush Gardens, spent his Saturday mornings mentoring seventh- and eighth-grade athletes, the coach said.

High school students at the hospital last night said the rumble in the park began as a beef between two rival teens. Glenwood's father, Troy Woodfin, said his son didn't know the attackers.

"He never saw them before," said Woodfin, 38, of Brooklyn. "It's sad. It was probably over something stupid."

About 20 youths were being questioned by police last night, sources said. But it was business as usual at the market, where shoppers walked around crime scene tape as if it were Christmas garland.

  • man oh man.. this senseless violence is too depressing. I wish the recent tragedies like the shooting of Sean Bell and the discovery of James Kim in Oregon as he searched for help would remind all of us (especially these kids with weapons) to appreciate life and stray away from bullshit and violence. Life's too short as it is.
