Anyone know of a good tailor?

I need to have a new suit altered ASAP, does anyone know of a good tailor in the area? Brooklyn or Manhattan is fine but Brooklyn is better.

I don't know if he's still there, but there was a really excellent tailor at a cleaners in Cobble Hill. It is on Court Street, probably between Warren or Kane or a little further beyond that (on the right side of Court Street heading towards Carroll Gardens).

The reason I mention this guy is that he also makes custom suits, so he's got to be pretty good.

In the meantime, though, I always recommend the tailoring at Caree Cleaners. I've always been pleased with their work (but I don't know if there is anything specific to tailoring for men's suits that requires special expertise).

There's one right near St Johns and Washington. No idea if he's any good though.

not bad as far as tailoring, but your clothing will come back all rumpled. try the cleaners at the corner of vanderbilt and park. they do a good job and will press the results.

It seems like most cleaners do tailoring as well but I'm a little hesitant to trust them with a new suit. For getting a pair of pants hemmed or replacing buttons/zippers/etc. I'm sure their fine but I don't want to trust just anyone who hangs a "tailor" shingle out.

Has anyone used one of these cleaner/tailors to have full alterations done on a suit? It sounds like some of them, like the one on court, could do a great job but I'm sure others are just butchers.

If you are picky about how things are tailored I would avoid any tailor that works out of a dry cleaner. I have gotten a lot of stuff tailored at Wilfred's in Manhattan and been very happy with the results. Wilfred's is slightly pricier than most places, but well worth it. They make you try on things after they've altered them, and if you are unhappy, they redo their work free of charge.

for full alterations I'd reco the place on Washington near St. John (across from Ripple). they're true tailors. they just aren't cleaners, so your stuff won't get pressed.

I sew, pretty well, make a lot of work and fun clothes and can do basic tailoring for myself. Pressing as you guy is really key to sewing from scratch or taking something in. I'm a little dubious of how good a job you can do if you're not pressing things...

after the alterations are made is when they don't press things. they press things while they do it, but then they tie it all up in a bundle, making everything rumpled.

I swear by Bridge Street Cleaners in Brooklyn. I have used them ever since I can remember (my family too). I have never had anything damaged by them and they have gotten many stains out of my suede jackets. They also do a good job of sewing pocketbook handles on my bags. The guys I work for have their suits altered there and are all very happy with it.

Flormont Tailors at 857 Broadway at 17th Street Suite 202-A 212-255-2549. George Casco is an old time craftsman who can turn the perfect cuff in his sleep. It's a hole in the wall and off the beaten track, but you are in good hands here. Yes, the elevator is creepy and the building smells funny, but if you want it done right, go to George. I've used George for pants, skirts and dresses and have always been thrilled with the results. He's the real deal for meat and potato stuff. I thought his prices were dirt cheap for the level of expertise, but that's subjective. Do not go to a dry cleaners for alterations. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's not. Give him a try and let me know if you had a good experience. I hope he never gets pushed out by gentrification because he is a real NY secret.
