Well 55 Brooklyn ave is pretty shady, and i believe on the next block is 71 Brooklyn ave, a Shelter which has also been quite eventful.

I've been living on Pacific between Brooklyn and New York for one year now. I've met a number of my neighbors and they have always been hospitable and welcoming. There are a few bad seeds in any neighborhood that make trouble and ours is no exception. Like any place in New York City, you have to be aware of your surroundings and make smart decisions about where to walk and how to interact with people. I should also say that my fiance, who is a woman, has always felt safe because there are always people around between our street and the subway at Nostrand and Fulton. And with Super Foodtown just around the corner, which is one of the best grocery stores in the city, you can't beat it (okay - a decent coffee shop and good restaurants that deliver would be nice...)

Pacific between Kingston and Brooklyn seems a little run-down and neglected, but between Brooklyn and New York it seems very nice. Check it out (day and night) before you sign anything. I've lived around Atlantic and Brooklyn Avenues (a block north) for more than three years. It took me a very short time to get used to the rhythm of the neighborhood, and now I like it a lot, and I'm very comfortable at all hours. As spacific wrote, take care (as always), be confident and respectful, and you should be fine. The BP on Atlantic has a few tables, and different kinds of coffee--and it's always open (the sandwich cafe part is not, but there's always coffee available). The coffee shop in Restoration Plaza (where the Super Foodtown is) is only open during the day, I think. Essence Bar on Atlantic at Troy (three blocks east) is nice--friendly bartenders, good music (live music sometimes, although I've never gone late enough to hear it--whenever I went it was early and pretty mellow, but they said it gets crowded later). No beer on tap, but still. There are some roti places on Fulton (between Brooklyn and Kingston and the other way past Nostrand) that have tables, but they're not full-service restaurants. I highly recommend Kings Pizza (Fulton and Brooklyn), and they deliver. Seriously. That block is very good for buses and trains. There's a lot of great stuff in the area, just a few blocks around. Check it out! --E.
