naked avatar poll

Not keen. Our computer is in the kitchen. I have three boys (oldest is 11, and he'd probably looooove a naked avatar....) who have been known to peer over my shoulder occasionally before I shoo them away. They should be able to choose their own porn.
Thanks for asking. But when is the next porn convention, anyway? I haven't heard anything about it. -
I would appreciate it if you'd provide details about what is and is not acceptable. One member complained that my great naked Avatar was "disturbing". Fair enough. But there are several Avatars other people use that I find deeply disturbing. Where is the line? Is an image that is very frightening ok but an image of an innocent nude woman wearing Manolos somehow not? I'd like to get really clear on this! Personally I find my current Avatar way way more disturbing than that naked picture, and yet nobody is complaining about my current Avatar.........
-
Oh and as for people worrying about viewing inappropriate avatars at work. Um... aren't you at work to...work? I don't think you're supposed to be spending your time on Daily Slope during work hours anyway, regardless of whether forum members' Avatars are nude or not....

Subject: How about art?
That's a complicated question Pitu. What if it was Madonna or Puberty by Edvard Munch or an artist photograph like below:
http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Velvet-1968-Posters_i808630_.htm
or a the David statue?
Where is the line drawn? I think avatars should be what we like them to be and if enough people show a valid concern then maybe, as an online community, we should by our own will/not by force, leave certain artistic or otherwise tastes for use in a different board or place. Just to be considerate.
I like the fact that her avatar provoked a reaction, and in that reaction there is a great opportunity to discuss the issues and topics that her photo provokes. There is a chance to deconstruct and analyze the underlying values and social norms, politics and prejudices that touch our everyday lives. Or am I just being a nerdy Literature and Art graduate? Hummm… maybe for the Politics board… I’ll be quiet now……

Great post! I found the reactions to my Avi very interesting too. If somebody else uses an Avatar like that, I shall find it quite fun and lively but in no way disturbing. Its no more disturbing than stuff I see in movies all the time - and I'm not talking about porn movies, hehe

The initial avatar, for those coming to this late, was a rather mainstream softcore photo of an actual female, on her hands and knees, nekkid except for stilletto pumps. It was certainly the kind of thing that gets you in trouble with HR at an average corporation if you're not supposed to be looking at porn at work. I think it's considered a liability issue for them in the area of sexual harassment.
On that note, mpwww, I'm sure you're aware that some companies allow employees to take a break with online surfing. You're not going to get very far around here tsk tsking about that.

Nope, didn't know that. I'm my own boss, so I wouldn't know about company policies, although I did hear that it was against the rules to surf the net on the company dime. -

I'm not sure how this started, but mpwww can do what he/she wants. I haven't seen any avatars on Brooklynian that violate any obscenity laws. If the community has a certain reaction to the avatars in question, then mpwww can choose to react to that, or not. happy new year! -
mpww,
what does it mean when you post a quote from someone
without adding your own words to the post. questionmark -
Eh, I'm not crazy about porn images for avatars or anything that is too distracting. On the forums I moderate, I've only objected to avatars a couple of times. Once was for humping avatars. The other was for someone who had a swastika as his avatar. He was from Finland and that's an old symbol that has fallen out of usage there since WW2. It's still jarring and sort of obvious that he was using it to be confrontational.
-
A swastika and humping are quite a bit more jarring than a woman crawling in spike heels, no?
-
my prob with the avatar is work related
and my prob with the new avatar is sizist related. I didn't find the previous avatar offensive, just scary work-wise. this avatar isn't offensive work-wise, but is offensive.
and yes, I'm white. and fat. and yes, I find your fat, white woman as a retaliatory avatar offensive. not just because I'm white and fat. (oh right, forgot to mention my brain) -

MPWWW - I think it's somewhat obvious that your avatar could be construed as insensitive in the context that you uploaded it, as a retort to those that did not appreciate your previous avatar. Out of respect for those that might feel that way, wouldn't it be a positive gesture to change it again? You don't have to, DH has already weighed in on that, but why not do it because it might be the right thing to do?

I think since my current Avatar is not a threat to people's jobs, I'm gonna stick with it for now. -

Well, that' certainly your right, but the problem I'm talking about involves peoples feelings not their jobs. Don't you think that's worth paying attention to? Most people don't but I expect more from my neighbors to be honest with you. Not trying to browbeat you, but you're coming across as insensitive to Alfairnidia, myself, and others. -

Here's the thing, Steve. Your Avatar pic actually scares the Bejezus out of me. Are you going to change it so I'm not upset? -

No problem. If you change yours, I'll be happy to change mine. I didn't realize it was upsetting because no one has said anything to me. I'm glad you pointed it out. -

It's just spooky. What is it? A child's body with a man's head on it? I'm not so manipulative that I even need you to change it. I don't like it at all and it disturbs me, but I don't need to feast my eyes on it. How about a bit of live and let live on this board? I've already taken down one supposedly offensive Avatar! -
Shoot, I thought we had a deal!
I didn't make it someone else on the board did, so I can't say for sure what it actually is. Until then, I had nothing else, and i really have nothing to replace it with, but I don't care if it's gone.
Honestly, if I were in your shoes, I probably would be resentful of people getting me to change it again, but I think it would be a nice thing to do. It's not the image that bothers me, but the context you put it up in and I really feel that's the more important thing here. -

Isn't it Ratner's head on a child's body? -
Well it is Ratner's head on something, but it looks like a grandma's body to me.

yes, that's me in my avatar. if you feel like a morbidly obese white lady represents you, hurrah. my thought is, based on the progression of all of this avatar crap in the last several hours, that you posted this avatar as a confrotnation. as such, I find it offensive. I have no power, though, to do anything about it as an offensive avatar, if you're at all concerned. I just think it's disgusting that your jibe, after you're called on the slutty naked chick, is to whip out the disgustingly fat white woman. what next? I'm assuming it's an asian woman, as I've said previously. can't wait to see her debasement. -

Nope, I have no intentions of using a picture of an Asian woman as an Avatar. I am not a racist. My racial background, if you're interested is 50% white and 50% black female. Neither of the pictures of women I've used as Avatars are actually me but they do represent my racial mix. I am sorry that my Avatar is offensive to you, that is not my intention. It was supposed to be funny. I just really do feel that we could all lighten up a little on this Avatar issue. I mean, Avatar pics aren't that big - you really don't need to look at mine. Also, me using an overweight white woman in my pic is not some kind of jibe at you - I didn't even know you were "fat" (your word, not mine) until you told me. I happen to be thin and if somebody used a pic of a nasty looking thin woman for their Avatar, I wouldn't take it as a personal attack on thin women. -
where's the :shaking my head graemlin: ? lol

Right, because making fun of fat people is sooooo funny and so much more okay than racial jokes! And because you didn't have a specific user in mind when choosing an offensive avatar or because you yourself don't find it offensive, you're absolved of all responsibility for offending people with it, according to your logic. So if someone were to use an avatar of a really negative image of a black person you didn't like and then blew off your objections by saying you don't have to look at it, would you find that acceptable? And if you say yes to that, does that mean anyone else that would find such an image offensive has no business saying so? Or that someone who isn't a member of the group being ridiculed in an image has no right to be offended by it? -
mypasswordwontwork wrote: A swastika and humping are quite a bit more jarring than a woman crawling in spike heels, no?
the woman was not crawling. the woman was on all fours waiting to be fucked.
jesus, do you think we're all that dumb that we'd believe this bullshit you're trying to dish out simple to get a reaction? nobody posts that picture without wanting a reaction. in fact, all of your avatars have asked for a reaction. -
