Damn, and I've been meaning to check out that roller rink! I haven't been to one since 3rd grade, for my 6th birthday party at Roll-A-Palace!

Four people shot. Hm. I had no idea that rollerskating could incite such passion.

I've been there many times as a kid and never experienced any crime. (In the 80's) Maybe I was fortunate. Crime is everywhere. Even in Jefferson County, Colorado. (Rememeber Columbine H.S.)

Here's a link to an interesting article about the rink, from the Village Voice in 2000:

Great article bolletje! A lot of history at the Empire Roller Rink. I'm glad they didn't tear it down.

You were seriously lucky yo. Then again, the only crime I experienced growing up in bed sty was getting my bus pass ripped off. -

How about covering the "R" on the subway pass with your thumb so you could use it on the bus (or covering the "S" on the bus pass to use it on the subway)?

Yup! I remember it all...those were the days. This sounds bad but I looked so young that I got away with using a H.S. bus pass when I went to college at Pratt. Can't get away with that anymore.

You guys bring back good memories. I remember my dad keeping a bowl of nickels by the front door so we didn't need to bug he or mom in the am for bus fair.
(For all you out-of-towners student bus fare was a nickel with your pass) -
I am so saddend by the reports of the shootings. I started going to Empire when I was about 11 or 12.
In those days your parents did not have to accompany you almost anywhere. You had to know how to behave, because just about anybody would tell if you did not.
My kids enjoyed Empire as well. It is an institution, for exercise, good music, and adolecent socialization -
No word on suspects yet?

Actually the Times article said the shooting occurred outside of the rink, not inside. Speaking of which, has anybody read about the Denny's killings occuring right outside of Denny's in S. California. Denny's?
Anyway here is the Times article:
Brooklyn: Four Shot Outside Rink
By CARA BUCKLEY
Published: January 4, 2007
Two women and two men were shot early yesterday in front of a roller skating rink just east of Prospect Park, the police said. Gunfire broke out shortly before 1 a.m. outside the Empire Roller Skating Center at 200 Empire Boulevard, the police said. Two people were hit in the leg, one in the foot and the fourth in the abdomen, the police said. All four victims, whose names were not released, were in stable condition at Kings County Hospital Center yesterday, the police said. No arrests have been made. -

Did the victims know the shooter? Was it a random crime or a mugging gone bad or maybe they were caught in the crossfire? Drug related? Four people is a lot of shootin'--there's gotta be a motive.

oops. The Denny's story was from last March. But there were three shootings in a row at Denny's in Anaheim. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/03/17/national/main1414986.shtml
