CS has their own resident transie (great waiter/tress), perfect for an Austrian Brooklyn meeting. Try the sardine salad sandwich...seriously!

also, Miriam. (5th ave and prospect) although I was a bit disappointed by their brunch, I think it would impress as so many seem impressed by it ! (according to the owner and other posts here...) we were a little underwhelmed but you know for certain people - what you describe - it would probably work. You feel sort of 'in the mix' there and the atmosphere is very nice. good luck!

I ate in Miriam before it was Miriam and while I thought it was just ok, everyone else I know seemed to have a raging hatred for the place. I have not been in there since it became Miriam

i keep meaning to try miriam; i know the woman whose husband owns it, an artist who used to be in my studio. she made all the tiles for the place when they opened in, summer 2005. i don't believe that what was there before miriam had anything to do with what is there now.

If he's non-escorted and gay I'd say Applewood on 11th Street between 7th and 8th. Escorted and hetero, 7th Ave Donuts/Luncheonette on 7th Ave between 9th Street and 8th Street. Anything else, grab a Sunday Times along with a baker's dozen with cream cheese and smoked salmon at La Bagel Delight.

I went there for lunch and it was great. The food was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. The fish tanks and the downstairs room is gorgeous. Lovely asian inspired art and the sushi bar is good! They have outdoor seating/garden in the back. Really nice for a day like today.

I would take my picky gay uncle there any day. Definitely check it out even if you don't go there today.

Katina's (Diner) is currently undergoing renovations and is closed at press time.

They most definitely needed some renovations done, cant wait to see the new sqeaky clean look (plus they're advertising WiFi outside, though looks like it wont be free) :x

I agree, although i was commenting on someones suggestion to go there because it's actually closed.

I only go there when its 3am and nothing else is open - its the only place around to get something to eat then (except for daisy's diner, but i dont always feel like walking over to 5th avenue at that hour.)

Try the donut shop on 7th Ave between 9th street and 8th. Open 24/7/365, a tad better quality and less expensive.

I do the low carb thing or The Zone and that doesn't allow for bagels. A girl in my line of work has to keep her figure.

I know that place too, but sometimes a few blocks when its cold & late at nite makes a difference as to where i go, though i wouldnt be caught dead at katinas during the day!
