Found Cat — Brooklynian

Found Cat

We found a cat on Saturday night at Lincoln and Classon. The cat was found wearing a flea collar and is friendly. If you or someone you know has lost a cat please respond with a description asap. We can probably only keep the cat for a week or so until we have to find it a new home.

  • It might be helpful for you to go ahead and post a description or picture, in case the owner isn't looking here but someone else recognizes the cat and can pass the info on to the owner. "Hey, Bob, is your cat missing? 'Cause I think someone may have found it," that kinda thing.
  • No, because anyone can say "Hey, that's my cat" and give me the same description that I posted. I'm not willing to risk putting it into the wrong hands. So you can do what I've been doing and ask all the cat owners you know if their's is missing. I'm also going to post some signs in the morning.

  • You're right to be concerned about some random person taking the cat, but you also want to help the people who want to help you! Typically what a lot of rescue groups do is post a description but leave out one or more identifying factors (the cat's gender, the color of the collar, a distinctive marking), or ask that the person claiming the animal bring a photo of the pet.

Also, if you haven't done so already, report the kitty to NYC Animal Care & Control, which keeps a database of lost/found pets and will notify you if someone has lost a cat matching your description. (Do not turn the cat over to them, however. Sadly, because of overcapacity they do euthanize.) Putting up flyers is a good idea, too.
  • Laura, those are great suggestions. And Lox, I understand your concern, but on the Brooklyn Pets board there are almost always cats up for adoption that take weeks before homes are found, so I don't think there's quite as much chance some jerk who wants a cat will claim a lost cat that isn't theirs as you might be worried about. And I think people are more likely to contact a friend to ask them if their cat is missing if they think it might actually be their friend's cat than they are to just tell everyone in the area they know about it.

It's *really* kind of you to be taking care of this kitty and trying to find it a home. If you can't find the owner and feel you're not able to take care of it any longer, please do post again -- maybe someone here would be willing to foster it until the owner's located or a new home can be found.
  • On the corner of st marks and classon someone posted about a missing cat. It says she is very sweet, and she has a mostly white body with tabby markings. I am not home now, but if you're around there, you should check for a number. There's a photo on there as well.
  • Thanks for the info, squegee. I saw that poster but it's a different cat. The cat we found is also very sweet but is mostly an all over gray tiger with white markings. I'm 99% sure that it's a female and maybe around one year old. We found her wearing a flea collar but no tags. We called the ASPCA and gave them the details so hopefully someone will give us a call. She's in good hands. She's staying in our guest room for now and is communicating with our other cats and dogs under the door jam. Depending on how long we foster her we may slowly introduce her to the rest of the family but we'll want to bring her to our vet first to make sure she has a clean bill of health.

Hooray for you, for taking such good care of her!

  • UPDATE! She's definitely a female. She's now in heat and howling every night. Good thing we found her when we did or she could have ended up adding to the already saturated stray population. We'll have to have her spayed but can't do it while she's in heat so we'll just have to deal with her cries for the next several days/nights. Eventually we'll have to find her a home unless we hear from her original caretaker. She's a sweetheart so it will be tough giving her away but she'll definitely be a great friend to someone for many years.
  • Lox, any new word? I can't leave this sticky up indefinitely. Hope there's been some good news!
  • Hmm. Okay, no word back from Lox, who hasn't even logged in for almost two weeks, and I tried sending a PM. I'm going to unsticky this now...
