it's crazy expensive in park slope now. I hear (from the NY Times!) that many of the buildings are being bought by investment bankers. so much for any last lingering 'bohemian' vibe...

I think the best part time work in the slope is babysitting. Hang out with a kid for 4-6 hours and make $60-$100 bucks. Just need to know some families.

I actually tutored a kid all of last year for a family in north slope. I'm not able to do it anymore and they are looking for a replacement and have yet to find someone. Do you have a college degree and experience w high sch tutoring? They pay $30/hr. Great kid too. Let me know.

At 23 years old, you can make an easy $12 to $15 per hour babysitting, and there is a high demand for babysitters around here.

Either evenings, weekends, if your schedule permits, pick up a kid after school. People are constantly looking for good childcare.

Related to the basement-cleaning idea, post an ad on craigslist (use caution) or here offering to help someone organize their papers or generally clean up.

I know a building superintendent who moonlights as an organizer and general handyman. He charges from $15 to $20 an hour for organizing and light clean up work (dusting and sweeping).

It's tax season, there probably are a lot of people who could use help sorting their paperwork -- promise to be discreet.

Finally, in Manhattan, Starbucks is always interviewing for people, and for 20 hours a week you can get health insurance.

I plan to be moving to Park Slope in the next few months... Without asking anything too personal, how much do you estimate someone needs to make minimum in order to live in a small studio or one bedroom there? Any insight would be helpful, as I've spent all of about a week in NY in my life

ariel: My boyfriend and I moved into Park Slope in September, with a combined income of just under $60K. We're renting a one bedroom on the outskirts of the slope—$1,600 a month—and that was one of the last properties that was available in that price range. We had to have a guarantor back our lease. When we were looking, there wasn't much else available for under $1800/mo. I'd say, find a roommate.

Tutor! If you have a Masters degree then $30 is WAY too low. I get at least $60 per hour of Spanish tutoring, and $45 if I do it through an agency. Science and Math tutors should make even more.
