Computer repair in the Slope?

is your apple (apple care?) warranty expired?
-
I don't know. I bought it through a university in July, and it worked fine at first, but all these little annoying glitches have emerged. Does a warranty cover things like viruses?
-
typically it does not cover viruses. but viruses for Macs are still pretty rare. if you bought it new, chances are it is still covered. you should check your documentation.

I don't know anything about those particular shops, but I do know Macs (repairing them is my job). 95% of the time you don't really need to take them in for repair, and if you do the Apple Store is probably your best bet. I have seen an ad on this board for a new Apple Certified shop in Brooklyn, that'd probably be a good choice too. If you want to PM me I can walk you through some very easy basic troubleshooting steps that can repair most things that can crop up.

There is a Park Slope resident who specializes in working with Macs. I have found him to be very helpful and reasonably priced as have a few folks I've sent his way. (I am not him). You can email him at [email protected].

I also repair macs and I have to say, I have had a number of Mac store screw ups wind up at my door. and when they screw up, they screw up BAD... like nuking your harddrive or just outright sending it back to you unfixed. you couldn't pay me enough to give them a computer. and their rates are even more nauseating. $300 just to replace a harddrive in an iPod? are you kidding? its a $60-something part and about 10 minutes of labor. no way they would ever get my business. -
I use Mac Mechanix (they come to your house and the owner lives in the slope) $150/hour or else Tek Serve. Also the Apple plan Extended Warranty is one of the only worthwhile warranties to buy. If you bought that, you can start with phone support.

Hi,
I would say there are no viruses for the mac. A very very slim change. I do Mac support for my company and we have 30+ macs not viruses for the last 12 years. And everyone is downloading everything!!
Start with disk utility and try some websites like macfixit.com or macosxhints.com or even the apple.com under support in discussions.
Good luck -
You should contact William Levin - he's a user on this board under the name "Wlevin", and he fixes macs in the slope.
In fact, his company is called MacBoy, and he's helped me out and done a fabulous job on mine.
