Fascinating Brooklyn history website — Brooklynian

Fascinating Brooklyn history website

I was Googling about for some information on a particular building when I ran across this site I had to share with you all:

http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com

Tons of stuff on this site, like maps of the old plantations of Brooklyn and the six towns that originally made up Brooklyn, a whole section on how women dressed in Flatbush in 1887, the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. And there are lots of off-site links to info on things like the 1918 Malbone Street subway tragedy, the 1798 yellow fever epidemic, and Susan B. Anthony's 1763 trial for illegal voting.

It's a huge site; I've bookmarked it for lots of future browsing.

  • Nice site. Have you (or anyone else) noticed that on your Jury Selection notice envelope there is a circular map of olde Brooklyn with the original six town? That until 1821 Brooklyn had legalized slavery? That the IRT subway crash on Empire Blvd. (it might be the one you're talking about by another name) is considered the worst transit accident in NYC history? That Erasmus High School is considered an American architectural gem? I question the 1763 trial of Susan B. however. Didn't she do the suffrage thing in the late 19th and early 20th century?

D'oh! You're right, of course. I both transposed and made a typographical error -- it was 1873. Sorry 'bout that.

And I *totally* missed that thing about the jury notice envelope last time I got one. That's kinda cool.
  • We even have our own flag (as do the other boros). This is the old design image
  • This is the new one designed by some one named Blas Delgado Ortiz. I think he was commissioned by Markowitz in 2000, but don't quote me about Markowitz and the year. image
