There was just a massive accident on 7th avenue. A bus went out of control.

  • that could mean a whole lot of things in terms of damages. could you be just a tad more specific?!?
  • Subject: Bus accident

A yellow school bus ran onto the sidewalk between Union and President St., on 7th Ave, across from the Aerosoles store, in front of Facets jewelry store. The bus mounted the sidewalk, the driver tried to back up and rammed into a few parked cars, causing massive damage. Fortunately, I don't believe there were any kids on the bus, and it didn't appear any pedestrians were struck from my vantage point across Union St.
  • holy mackerel! thanks for the update -- especially about the people factor (or lack thereof, thank goodness).
  • He must have been knocked senseless to have tried to back up unless he thought he was on top of someone.
  • I found out that a truck was double parked and the school bus went around it too fast, lost control and smashed into a parked silver mercedes. The bus driver must have panicked, because next thing he/she went into reverse accelerating and smashed a red car under a jeep, and toppled the tree in front of the wireless store.
  • Wow, I must have just missed it?!? I was on 7th and Union at the BofA about 2 1/2 hours ago. Poor bus driver, he's going to probably lose his job.
  • Yeah that was really something. I walked by not long before it happened and when I got back it kind of freaked me out to have been so close to something like that.

s/he should get fired if indeed was going to fast trying to pass a double parked car in a heavily pedestrian area in the middle of the afternoon. recklessness is not a good trait in a school bus driver.
  • Well, I could have been black ice. That's been in the news today.
  • poor tree
  • I don't know if this qualifies as a "massive" accident.

I have some pics of the accident posted here.

  • Looks like the S.U.V. made it. Thank heavens.
  • My Lord. Unbelievable that no one was injured.
  • Wow, those pictures are really something. Were there people in the black and red cars, or were they parked? It's really unbelievable no one was hurt--and lucky.
  • wow...just wow...how does that even happen?

it's more than a fender bender tho'...
  • double-parking (cars and delivery trucks) is a problem on 7th ave between 1st st. and union.
  • Woh.... ok, I retract my earlier comment.

Yeah, I keep looking at it wondering how the hell the SUV got up on top of the other car like that -- craziness! It's amazing nobody got hurt in that.

And to echo earlier statements: I'm not feeling any sympathy for the driver. It's a good thing there were no kids on the bus.
  • gothamist also posted a short video of the aftermath and crowd

  • is it just me or does that video seem to only be about the back of people's heads?
  • I'm glad it wasn't my car that was parked there.

Indeed. That video is not that exciting. And considering how many people were there snapping photos and videos, I'm surprised there isn't any better footage.

And, apparently my photos have been DIGGed on DIGG. Which is bizarre. I planned on posting them specifically to share with the Daily Heights/Slope group and Curbed and that's it. Based on the Daily Heights linkage, there were a max of 900 views on one photo as of 11:00am today. Now the same picture hasbeen viewed 26,000 times?!? The Internet is weird...

FYI, the name's Jack. And I did have an account here, but I think something happened with my e-mail associated with that account and I can't login again or retrieve my password. So if there's an admin here, e-mail me @ JackSzwergold [at sign] g[ee]mail [dot] com and maybe we can get it back up and running.
  • those school buses are driven by lunatics, they MUST be paid by how quickly they can do their jobs because they are always in a huge hurry especially when they are empty.
