Wing Wagon
Great review of Wing Wagon from a Daily Heights regular. Excerpts below. (Didn't someone else recently post a bit on Wing Wagon?)
Now up at Tales of the Cupcake Mafia: "Stopping by Video Edge ... I had just rented Dead Like Me Season One Disc Three when I decided to stop and pick up dinner. Eschewing traditional take-out I decided to take advantage of my new neighborhood and head to a place called 'The Wing Wagon.'..."
"The wings only came in batches of 10, and I wanted to try at least two different sauces. So I ordered 20 wings, 10 BBQ and 10 Medium and waited for my order. I was repulsed yet giddy with the weight of my wings as I carried them home. Opening the boxes, the potential for mess was so great, I moved the whole operation to the kitchen sink and ate standing up beside it."
"... I was attacking these wings with a fervor that had not been seen since the days dinosaurs walked the Earth. Sauce was all over my mouth which would generally gross me out but I swear I did not care ... I looked up quickly and caught a glance of my reflection of the kitchen window and mistook myself for a feral raccoon."

Awesome!

I had posted on a thread about dive bars that we love to get Wing Wagon and take it in there to eat with a pitcher or two...(they encouraged us to do this the first time we went to Mooney's and we have done it every time since!) -

I'm not surprised they encourage you to get those wings. There are soooo salty, that you probably wind up drinking much more! -

Heheh...well actually they didn't specifically tell us to go there, but we came in asking if they served wings and they said they had no food but we were more than welcome to go get some and bring it in. Wing Wagon was a natural choice. (And, oddly, I'm told their vegetarian stuff is good too! We went there with a veg friend one time and she loved what she got. Unfortunately I can't remember what it was now...a sandwich or burrito of some kind, I think) -
do they deliver?

No they don't! Grr...I found that out the hard way when I threw a party. Pickup/take out only.
I love Wing Wagon though. I've been going there since I was a kid. They've gotten a lot more expensive over the years, but what hasn't. And their cakes are good too! -

Have you tried their red velvet cake? That looked really good the last time I was in there. I've been wanting to try it.
Another good place for cake in the neighborhood: 3D's Place on Washington and St. Johns. I had their pineapple upside down cake and have been craving it ever since!
-
I actually limit myself to once a week. Their wings are like crack - I go through withdrawals.
The Red Velvet is delicious. What flavor is that supposed to be, anyway? The battery powered artificial dye doesn't denote anything indigenous to this earth.
Once piece of trivia: Wing Wagon has Hot, X-Hot and XXX-Hot... but no XX-Hot. -

I think Red Velvet is essentially sugar-flavored.

I heard they're replacing the X-Hot with NC-17. :P -

I have to pass on red velvet cake because the ingredients includes one of those lovely things I'm allergic to: chocolate. I still to the carrot cake. -
First of all, I can't believe I made the front page of Daily Heights. Guess I will risk attending the West Indian Carnevale Parade now, should a stray bullet or knife blade find its way into my doughy, wing-fed flesh I can die happy knowing I achieved this level of fame!
A friend from out of town was visiting last weekend, we stopped a the Wing Wagon, natch. We tried the Garlic Parmesean wings and we both went gaga for them. It's probably a blessing they don't deliver, otherwise between the wings and netflix my little cupcake ass would never leave my house.
Props as well for including ample wet wipes... -
Maybe I love spicy food so much that my taste buds died but I don't think the XXX hot are THAT hot.... does anyone agree? My fav are the honey BBQ! YUM!
-
Not only are the wet wipes ample, but they've obviously ordered the *softest* napkins they could find. Most take-out places, especially cheap pizza places (Read: Gino's), give you those waxy, non-absorbent sheets of sand paper. Ga! Murder on my face. Wing Wagon's are like baby wipes. Great for feral raccoons everywhere.

Subject: Wing-a-ling
Am I the only one that finds Wing Wagon's wings a bit anemic?
Unless I am ordering for my annual "let's-watch-the Eagles-lose-again" party, I generally go to Soda Bar for my wing jones. They could turn up the spice a bit, but the wings themselves are nice 'n' plump.
Bonnie's on 5th Ave. is also terrific, which should not be surprising given the whole Buffalo vibe that they are rockin' down there.
I also hear good things about 200 5th, but haven't had them yet. -

definately agree.
i am a fan, and have eaten there quite a bit.
but don't find them to be hot at all.
i lived in colorado for about 10 years. after living out west, i find that nothing in new york considered "spicy" actually is.
(he posted secure in the knowledge that some new yorker would attempt to proove him wrong and he would thusly find some good spicy food). -
Hottest wings I EVER had were at Down the Hatch. I think they were called suicide.
The only other place that had them really hot was at this bar called Fulton St. Cafe in Poughkeepsie, NY (Its gone now). They used to make them SOOO hot. I miss the good ole college days....

yup. the few times that i've had them, they've been skinny.Muk wrote: Bonnie's on 5th Ave. is also terrific, which should not be surprising given the whole Buffalo vibe that they are rockin' down there.
i'll have to try 'em... but that's a bit of a walk for me now...Muk wrote: I also hear good things about 200 5th, but haven't had them yet.
used to work there- they are good... -

Definitely true. It's rare to find something very hot here without adding your own extra sauce or spice.
As for the "anemic" wings...I don't know why, but I actually kind of prefer small wings. Maybe that's just me, but it's like the sauce/meat ratio is just right or something...when wings are super-meaty, I'm almost disappointed.
Weird, I know. -
down the hatch are good wings, and actually hot.
i forgot about that place. thanks for reminding me.
200 Fifth are pretty good.
decently sized, but definately not hot.
for the extra couple of block walk i recomend Bonnies.
probably even plumper than 200 Fifth wings on average
and, their hottest are actually pretty hot. -

not weird -- I'm in total agreement. means the wings aren't packed with estrogen. sweet! may not be organic, but closer than bonnies.
Weird, I know.

When was that? When I asked them a few months ago, the said they were working on delivery and would deliver soon. -

That was February admittedly. Someone should check if they do now. -

I do believe they have begun a delivery service, just limited to certain hours of the evening (of which I'm unsure). To answer a few other questions: red velvet cake is a good-old golden or white cake with cocoa powder and an outrageous amount (usually 2-3 little bottles) of red dye. It's got a subtle flavor, and thankfully, red dye is no longer hazardous to one's health. The guy who bakes for WW also makes a german chocolate cake and a strawberry pound cake - they're usually brought in fresh on Tues. and Friday nights, but the staff tells me he's a little unreliable, so don't quote me (or them) on that. All the cakes are good, but imho not as good as Cake Man Raven's version when it's fresh (he's on Fulton St.). For anyone who likes a little "in the know" food trivia, red velevet aficionados will argue to the death about whether it should have a cream cheese icing (WW's does), or a very fluffy, incredibly ethereal white icing that only showcases the flavor of the red cake. Can you tell which camp I'm in? The latter version is MUCH harder to find and also much more difficult to make. -

There's a bakery on between 139th and 140 street somewhere in central harlem (maybe on powell?) that makes red velvet cake with dark chocolate icing. um. that is the best thing ever. cream cheese v. white frosting has NOTHING on this stuff. -
I've been craving wings ever since I read this post weeks ago and I finally talked my friend into getting dinner there tonight. Yum! Thank goodness they put 15 wetnaps in the bag with the wings, sweet potato fries & onion rings. Greasy goodness.
According to their menu, they deliver 12-8PM.
What's up with the two way mirror to the kitchen?
Howdy, Stranger!
