Weird Work/Se7en Story/Critique of American Culture

OK, as most of you know, I'm an ESL teacher at LAGCC. Anyway, we have been studying "mysteries" for this short winter semester. I showed 7 and we analyzed it for clues and then I gave my class the tough assignment to role play as Det. Mills after the box and the pregnancy issue is opened. 27/30 wouldn't kill John Doe.

That was profound to me. What would you do?

If it were me, as I told my class, I'd smoke him. I wouldn't care who won.

It is the opposite feeling I have about capital punishment, though.

Tough decision, for me, but still can't believe how few would've killed him.

What would you do?

  • Maybe for those of us who aren't up to speed, you could point us at a synopsis of the scenario?
  • Ok, so this serial killer provokes 2 cops to drive out to the middle of nowhere and a package arrives. The package is the head of a preganant wife of Detective Mills. He doesn't even know she is pregnant until the killer says it. He's a cop, has a gun and is pointing it at the guy.........

That was the prompt after 120 minutes of film with a really creepy guy doing some serious murder shit.

My students had to be Mills and decide what to do at that point.
  • You shoot the fuck.
  • I'd split the difference and inflict a crippling injury.
  • shoot him in the legs
  • one of my favorite movies. amazing, painful, angst-ridden scene.

if i went thru what det. mills went thru, and afterwards lost the most precious item of my world at the hands of a psychopath who probably tortured her before he killed her, i'd have shot john doe dead. vengeance and wrath, man. vengeance and wrath.

OT, LeeHo, i worked at LAGCC for 3 years. small world gettin' smaller every day.
