    and where is le gamin?
Not sure about Luigi's, but Le Gamin is on Vanderbilt, I think between Bergen and Dean. Same side of the block as Red Lipstick.

Tried it, but I'm not allowed to offer my opinion on bagels - I'm from the midwest.

I didn't think that they were anything special - nice to have, but not worth a detour.

...and the decor is completely uninspired.

    True. That's where it is.
  • I want a delicious Thai restaurant. Not good Thai or okay Thai, but really freaking amazing Thai, like Watana in Park Slope (7th Ave. and 13th).

I'd ask for good Chinese, too, but I'm pretty certain that doesn't exist outside of Chinatown, and even a lot of places there are super-crap.

Lastly, a bar as nice as Union Hall would be super. Especially if they served the same really tiny hamburgers as Union Hall does.

    My needs are few.
  • Chinese food isn't that great in most of China town, or so I hear from the insiders. You've got to go to Flushing!
  • I want one of almost everything mentioned here. The fish shop, the cheese shop, and the really good market (or all 3 in one) are my top priorities, but I'd happily (and frequently) patronize the bagel shop, the butcher shop, and the awesome thai restaurant, too.
  • Organic produce/gourmet grocery
    24 hour diner
GOOD PIZZA for delivery or takeout ala Ana Maria's in Billyburg
a store that has household/kitchen/bath stuff in a range of qualites but with style
    good vietnamese food
    good thai food
mexican taco/tamale stand or deli ala Matamoros in Billyburg
    good coffee shop/internet cafe

I've heard the same thing. But I still love my Golden Bridge for Sunday Dim Sum.

you've got a few of those types (they don't really have kitchen stuff, though their aprons are badass) at Natural Heights on Washington and St. Marks. and, I bet, while I believe, from previous conversations, the owner don't want to carry extremely perishable goods (like food), they might be receptive to other product suggestions.

(for full disclosure, I do shop there and I do know the owner and her husband and consider them good friends. I do not own any shares of their shop, but I'd be devastated if they went away)

OMG!!! A Trader Joes down the street would make my life complete!

Will someone explain Trader Joe's to me? Everyone gets so excited about it, but I'm baffled. I went there today out of curiosity and left empty-handed. Seems to me that if you're a 22-year-old college student and you're stoned, it would be perfect. But the whole store is snack food and high-sodium prepared food for people who can't chop their own vegetables. Seriously, what am I missing here? I want to like it but I just can't.
  • well. one awesome part about trader joe's is that they contract exclusively with farms and wineries to produce their own products. and they pay fair wages, but get rid of the whole distribution bullshit that happens to most food/wine vendors. this drops the cost of almost everything significantly.

their prepared food is delicious compared to, say, whole foods. and costs significantly less. sure, everything prepared outside of your home is high sodium. have you eaten in a fine dining restaurant lately? while you may not taste it as 'salty' much of the food is quite salted. chefs are trained to salt at every sage. sodium counts on restaurant foods are through the roof.
