Open Basketball? Why is it so difficult to find a game? — Brooklynian

Open Basketball? Why is it so difficult to find a game?

I quit smoking and in order to retain my sanity I need to run around and be competitive. I'm looking for a basketball game to play in--either open or for a team, free or for a charge.

I am almost thirty, 6'4, and have some game--so I'm not looking to run against teenagers.

Please let me know what is out there... I am already playing in a game on Weds nights, but am looking for a run any other day. I am also interested in knowing the location of any outdoor hoops that draw likeminded individuals to play... as I haven't seen any in prospect park (why????) and I find it ridiculous to have to travel to Manhattan to find a game.

  • Try the basketball courts on Bergen between 6th and Carlton I see people playing all the time there and looks like many of them are pick up games. On the weekends it looks like an organization runs the games there but Im not sure if its a league or not
  • I have been told that there are full court games at the Y on Court Street on Sunday from 8 to 11. The players are in the 30-40 age bracket. I know because I used to play with them at the Eastern Athletic Club in Brooklyn Heights before the court there was turned into a workout area.

There are also games at the Y on 9th Street but I am not sure when.

During the summer, I play on the court in Bourum Hill near the corner of Pacific and 3rd Ave. The games on Bergen are a younger crowd that usually isn't very interested in passing or playing defense.
