Synagogues of East NY and Brownsville
Greetings from the Upper Mid West where we are having a cold snap and the wind chill factor is considerably lower than ZERO. Ouch!
I have a suggestion for a photo topic -- having grown up in East New York, I remember several abandoned synagogues there and in Brownsville. I would like to know if any of those old buildings are still standing and would greatly appreciate photos of those buildings (inside and outside, if possible) with their precise location. Please post as many photos as you can.
Thanx!

Can anyone help source or start documenting any of these places for prodiglason?
prodigalson, have you searched flckr? There's a lot of Brooklyn based photo streams...If you find anything, start a thread on this board. -

Subject: Synagogues in East New York, Brooklyn, NY
There are two places that have pictures of synagogues in East New York that came to mind. The East New York Project on http://www.tapeshare.com and Forgotten New York http://www.forgotten-ny.com/. If you went to school there I have a page on PS 64/Berriman on myspace. http://www.myspace.com/berriman64. There is no commercial material on these sites except of offers of the books with the neighborhood and East New York history. I went to Franklin K Lane HS. You can find me on FaceBook also. There are more pictures on flicker also if you search diligently. There is one in flicker located on Berriman St and Hegeman Street. This one I know because I delivered Settzer and soda there then years later, a friend of mine bought the place and made apartments. THIS IS HOW IT LOOKS NOW: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=berriman+and+hegeman+11208&ie=UTF8&hl=en&hq=&hnear=Hegeman+Ave+&+Berriman+St,+Brooklyn,+Kings,+New+York+11208&ll=40.666382,-73.877048&spn=0,0.019205&z=16&layer=c&cbll=40.666259,-73.876953&panoid=kkWjXgJ0buc8xacJqlDfNg&cbp=12,293.9,,0,20.35 -

New Lots Avenue shtiebel in East New York now used as a Pentecostal church:

current photo of another small synagogue that appears to be still being used in that manner:
Dumont Avenue near Vermont Street in East New York

Not in East New York-Brownsville but there's a magnificent synagogue being used as a church on the corner of Park Place and Kingston.
-
Wow. I just Googled it and, yes, what a magnificent building:
-
Brooklyn isn't the only place where old synagogues evolved into churches. Minneapolis (esp the North Side) had quite a few conversion as well such as this one:

There was a recent showing on TPT (Twin Cities TV) about this but I could not find a link.
