I didn't know who she was, it's possible that others don't......
  • Great author - as a science fiction reader, it was doubly sad for me when she passed. Science fiction readership isn't what it should be, with a lingering stigma of geekiness. Because of that, I get the feeling that even fewer minorities and women knew about a Butler - a great writer that addressed a variety of social issues.
  • WhiFi, you'd be wrong. You'd be surprised how many closet geeks there are in the Black community. Not to mention there are a whole bunch of women who discovered her in Afro-Am/Women's literary studies classes.
  • No doubt - some of my friends growing up were overt geeks in the Black community, but my point is this - if you were to stop people in the streets, I'm sure that more than 80% would know the name 50 cent, while less than 20% would know Octavia, which is a shame. Then again, I'm sure that the same could be said about Justin Timberlake and Ursula K LeGuin... maybe it's just a sad state all the way around...
  • Yah, the SciFi folks get no love even though they are some of the most thought provoking and prolific authors out there. Speaking of which, is anyone going to nycomiccon next week?
  • Disagree with baseball..

There are tons who know and adore her works still, I per se am no lover of sci fi... but her writing was TOPS!

Sad loss, but we'll have great time, reading, and sharing thoughts.
  • I meant.. profile "Basketball Fan..."
    Oops.
  • I have read both of those books and love Butler's work but, sadly, cannot join the discussion. But I wanted to chirp in and recommend her work for those who have not encountered it. It's not traditional sci-fi (at least those two), so even if sci fi is not your thing, you might dig these books.
  • she's amazing. love her work. sigh.

Not to pick nits, but I would call her traditional sci-fi (time travel?), but not hard sci-fi, which is what non-sci-fi readers might think of as traditional sci-fi... anywho... :D
  • @alafairnadia... SO true... lol

@ Whyfi....In interviews Octavia noted, she did not like to be "classified" period, [-X and didn't consider herself sci-fi, just a writer, who dabble in genres of such sci-fi nature. :-' thanks folks for sharing... your thoughts
