2/24: Anniversary of 1033 Pacific arson deaths — Brooklynian

2/24: Anniversary of 1033 Pacific arson deaths

On Feb. 24, 2006, an arsonist lit a fire at 1033 Pacific Street. It killed four people. This was just one of the suspicious fires that night, but the arsonist was never caught.

I think there will be a dawn vigil on Saturday in front of the home. The fire took place at about 5:30am, and some Community Board 8 members did weekly (!) vigils for a few month. Amazingly, after making as much noise as we could, the number of suspicious fires in Brooklyn dropped dramatically.

I am organizing a fundraiser for the families at Dakar restaurant this Sunday. We start meeting at 6pm and my West African band Kakande will play at 7. The suggested donation is $20, and donations will help the Fofana and Williams families- I hope they'll be there.

Dakar is located at 285 Grand between Lafayette & Clifton.

If you want to help the Fofana family directly, send a check to:
    The Fofana Family Fund
    Carver Federal Savings Bank
    4 Hanson Place
    Brooklyn, NY 11217

Three of the victims were immigrants from Burkina Faso in West Africa. The father of the family helped build Dakar restaurant, so there's a direct connection there. The fourth victim was Sherri Williams, and we're making sure that we're helping her family as well.

Write to me if you need more details on the gathering on Sunday. You can also find out more at this link:
