nearest emergency room???? — Brooklynian

nearest emergency room????

i think i broke my ankle outside of southpaw last night.

at first i thought i would wake up and it wouldn't hurt like it did yesterday when my friend had to help me home but it is swollen and hurts to put any pressure on or to touch...

so i guess i have to suck it up.

where is the nearest emergency room?

thank you.

  • If it's that bad, I think that a google search is in order.
  • and until then,
    R- rest
I - ice (for initial trauma)
    C - compress
    E - elevate
  • Long Island Medical in Brooklyn Heights is a way easier emergency room to go to (you'll get seen faster, less awful in general) than Methodist.

Closer is Methodist Hospital, but it stinks. I'd go to Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn Heights -- they have a good local hospital for basic issues like this. But since you'll probably be in a car service anyway, you might consider going to the walk-in trauma center at the Hospital for Joint Diseases on 16th Street between 1st and 2nd Aves in Manhattan (double check the address before going though). I'm told they have an excellent center (I had back surgery at the hospital) and all they do are orthopedic issues, so you'll be getting the best care.
  • i've had good experiences with methodist, they're closer, and i can't imagine they can't take good care of a broken foot.
  • Your only real choices are Methodist in PS, LICH in Cobble Hill, or Brooklyn Hospital in Ft Greene. Interfaith in BS has an emergency room, but its probably as far as LICH and my recollection is that they are a birthing hospital more than anything else. My advice, pick one of those three call a cab and have it take you directly to the emergency room.
  • Another vote against Methodist.
  • is methodist that sketchy?

i actually called to see if i could get an X ray and this woman told me "Yes you can come in and bipass the emergency room and just get an X Ray" but when I got there, I needed a referral. BUt the lady on the phone told me I didn't need one. I was so pissed by the time I got down there and I wasn't going to pay for emergency room services so I got a brace for it at a drug store and have been icing it. I am feeling a bit better so I imagine it must be sprained not broken. But still, what an ordeal and waste of cab fare.
  • Methodist isn't sketchy, just a pain in the ass.

Another way to look at it..perhaps they are busy because of their location, compared to LICH. Actually I have no idea what makes the experience soooo much smoother at LICH, but it is. My girlfriend had a couple of things happen in a row (including a broken hand) so we had plenty of comparison shopping...
  • Oy vey. Sorry to hear about that but thanks for the advice.

I agree. I have to add that one of the triage nurses at LICH went to nursing school with my best friend so I personally feel better going to LICH. Most of my doctors are affiliated with Methodist but for emergencies I always go to LICH. I think that they are much better staffed there also.

    Check your PM.
  • Having raised two children and lived here 20 years we have had quite a few trips to the ER. My complaint against Methodist is that you wait forever and then some. For the person needing treatment that is often unbearable. Once you are treated they are OK. It is getting into the treatment area. Going with kids is especially problematic because you need pediatrics plus whatever the problem area is, like X-rays. I have gone there in the evening and gotten out at 3AM in the worst cases. However the medical treatment was always OK -I guess that's why we kept going back.
  • Subject: How about Maimonides?

Does anybody have experience with Maimonides' ER or other services? On paper, they look pretty good. I remember looking up their maternity stats on Aetna's website, and Maimonides had high volume and a low rate of complications.
I've been treated at LICH ER. It was okay. But a friend had to stay there for a pretty hellish week during a difficult pregnancy. I wasn't impressed by the nursing staff at all.
  • yeah - I used the birth center there before it closed, and while the midwives were amazing, postpartum was HELL. my mother had to go out to a drug store to get motrin, cause the nurses would only offer me percocet (I didn't just have a baby without drugs to be doped up *after* the fact!), they didn't bring me any food, not once, and they screwed up my daughter's blood draw (too gruesome - I'll spare you). thank goodness for the 12 hour discharge - we were soooo outta there.
  • i used the methodist e.r. for an ankle injury about 5 yrs ago after my dog got spooked while we were jogging and yanked me off-balance. waited 4 hrs bawling in pain for triage and some ibuprofen. 2 more hours for an xray. sent me home with a big brace after diagnosing torn ligaments. 3 weeks later and still blue and swollen from knee to toe, my followup with orthopedist showed clear fractures in three places, upon which i should not have been bearing weight all that time. have not tried lich, but i'll not use the methodist e.r. for a non lifethreatening issue ever again. in fact, when i run past there, even now, i ceremoniously flip them the bird.

The Hospital for Joint Diseases is definitely the way to go if you think you have a fracture or sprain. I went to their ER with my daughter when she had a broken finger and more recently when I fell and hurt my elbow. You get seen quickly, the waiting room is clean and quiet, and the people who work there are nice. It is a much better experience than the ER at LICH and infinitely better than going to Methodist. Even with taking a car service there and back, it will take less time than going to a local emergency room.
  • So, what's the update? Was it really broken?
