edited November -1 in Park Slope
Went to the optical place at 9th and 7th a few months back and the place was packed, stuffy and the staff was RUDE. Will never go back.... but need new glasses regardless.

Anyone been to ansonia optical on 7th bt 10th and 11th?

  • I have lived in the slope for 22 years (all of them wearing glasses). I now live in the south slope, but I go to eyes on the slope on 7th and Garfield or Carrol. They are super friendly, great style suggestions, and the Father and Son offer incredible customer satisfaction. Am I gushing. Yes. but three members of my family wear glasses, so we spend a considerable chunk of change on specs. My six year old broke his first pair of frames a day or two after he got them, and they replaced them for free. So, I travel down slope to them, and it's worth it.
  • I hate to recommend a chain, but, have you tried Costco? I havn't been there yet but when I called they quoted me $86 for tri-focal lenses with AR and UV coating. The last lenses I got, bifocals with AR coating cost me $170

1 set of lenses and you pay for the membership for the year.
  • I've only had good experiences with Urban Optical, for many years. My daughter got her glasses and then contacts there too, and they were all very nice to her. It does get crowded in there.

we just had an amazing experience there. My son, 5 1/2, was getting his first pair. John, who I think is the owner, spent a great deal of time and made him so comfortable. I would definately check it out. I personally have gotten frames at Eyes on the Slope and thought they were great too.

  • I too just got new glasses from Urban Optical. I really liked the fact that they gave me free tryout of a new brand of daily contacts and considering I hardly wear contacts in the winter these will last me for awhile (I got two weeks worth).

Also my boyfriend has had a good experience with Eyes on the Slope, so I suppose either one works.
  • I use Ansonia as well - John is very caring and he works hard to find the exact right thing for you. Which is probably why it was crowded that day - he takes that care with all his customers. As for the rudeness, I have never experienced that. The "staff" is just John and his wife. Old-fashioned, maybe, but he's been in the neighborhood for years and I love that about the place.
  • I always get my glasses at Costco, and the prices and quality are amazing. I get my eye exams there too -- $95, and I think I've always gotten a more thorough exam than when I used to pay a Park Ave optometrist $400. Their selection of frames is better than you'd think, as well. I wear hi-quality modern frameless rims that cost about $75, and I can't tell you how many people have complimented them or asked what designer made them. (I let them think I paid $$$...) Cost for the whole shebang, with polished rims, scratch coating, Transitions, everything -- about $190 a pair, if I remember correctly. IMO, it would be worth the $50 to join, even if I never bought another thing there.

Also, FWIW, Consumer Reports rated them the best chain eye care/glasses store a few years ago.
