    yeah, that's gross.
  • Okay, BW's not for everyone, but after living in the " Land o' Microbrew" aka Seattle for a while, sometimes it's nice just to have a beer while you listen to punk rock. Please don't judge me for for my favorite punk rock beer of choice. 8) Look foward to meeting you at Soda soon.
  • no sxe or something, just beer or drink snobs! :P
  • All beverage choices aside, a punk rock night every once in a while would make us feel really welcome. As I said earlier, this thread was a breath of fresh air from some of the posts on the CH board, ( although they are all valuable bits of info).
  • CH is cool, no worries. close to so much, you can still join the co-op and walk or bus it or cheap car service, you will be fine. for real.
  • Thanks for the reassurrance (sp?). We've collectively lived from Atlanta to Seattle to Los Angeles and my NYC friends are way sketchy on us for our CH choice. We got a great brownstone @ New York Ave and St. Johns, and can't wait. Thanks!
  • I was never terribly punk, but I was very much into college radio in the late 80's (worked at our campus station all four years and was station manager my senior year) and we put on a ton of all ages shows and so on, so I got to hang out from time to time with bands like the Circle Jerks, L7 (before they ever had their one-hit wonder), and so on. Interviewed the Descendants once too. I made the mistake of telling them we were cable radio and therefore not FCC-regulated, so most of the interview consisted of them saying "fuck" as many times as possible and farting into the mics.

you'll be fine. every time I wander into CH (which ain't far - I just have to cross Washington) I think "this is great - why don't I come here more often??" there's a dressmaker's shop I need to check out on like Park and Bedford or something that looked really fantastic (in the middle of the night, from a car service car window, but still, I have good eyes, despite the new glasses). I must go there. maybe in a few weeks...
  • i always wanted mohawk. :p. if would go punk ;) if i could look good in it :/.

"got"?! so casual... new york ave is pretty quiet in my opinion, nice & lots of tress.. isn't atlanta like one of the more sketchy cities with lots of guns and murder?!

    Yeah,
Atlanta can be / is pretty rough, so I'm used to it, but my wife grew up in Seattle so our friends are trying to "err" on the side of caution.
  • ignore them. there is no neighborhood in nyc that is free of muggings and other bizarre criminal events (like the weird-o not-a-firefighter guy on halloween in chelsea). I had a bullet through my front window in harlem, and a guy was shot in front of that same building. over a 2 year period. there's only so much you can be afraid of and anticipate. you'll be fine. just be street smart and take precautions (don't carry more cash than you can afford to lose, don't talk on a cell phone/listen to an ipod at night walking home from the subway, dip into open businesses if you feel threatened and call a car service - a $6 cab ride is still cheaper than anything else). if your wife is scared, you should both attend some self-defense classes (I say both so she doesn't feel singled out) - I've done it and have used the skills I learned. there's absolutely no reason to walk around worried, and, quite frankly, if you become afraid of going out at night, how are you going to attend punk night?!
  • Thanks for the advice, neither one of us is scared of the neighborhood, but it's just always nice to get advice from others that are already living in the area. We've both traveled the world and we have visited / and worked in NYC many times. It's kinda funny, this line of questioning didn't even come up until our Manhattan/ Williamsburg friends questioned us, and some of the posts reguarding the crime and teenagers in the CH forum. Thanks for any / all advice, it's always nice to be well informed.
Punk night .. See you there.

One thing to keep in mind, too, is that this (PH forum) is considered the 'main' forum. The other neighborhood forums haven't been around as long, and as such, only very neighborhood specific stuff gets posted on them. Don't be discouraged if it seems as if all of the fun is happening on the PH board!

so, any of you soda regulars or other neighborhood-bar devotees willing to talk to anybody on behalf of mine and stuart's record collection? seriously, the ducky boys from butler street (not place, not PH, i know) need to be heard more in brooklyn. let's do this...all you people who know people start working those connections.

oh, and seriously, the hell with williamsburg. shitty architecture, no trees, few actually cool places to go. i like the enormous budweiser at the turkey's nest as much as the next guy, but i wouldn't move there for it.

I emailed my pal last night - we should just figure out a time to meet up and you guys can plead your case. I could see if I could get him to come to happy hour (he's not a regular DHer) or we could figure it out next week (I'm outta town this weekend).
