The hot chocolate is overpriced and a disappointment. City Bakery has great hot chocolate and it's actually cheaper than Cocoa Bar. It's also thicker, richer and much more filling. I think Cocoa Bar hc is made from a powder and I think it's $4.37? Rip
Also, why the table service? That is a turn-off for people -- seating is uncomfortable and tables make sitting there awkward. -
Subject: you don't know what you're talking about
whom ever wrote the last comment is an idiot. everyone knows they melt down real chocolate for the hot chocolate- they do it right in front of you!! this is the most negative site i've ever been to. you guys bash one business after the other. it seems like you want all the good ones to go. so negative, get over yourselves!
by the way- i just called cocoa bar and their hot chocolate is $3.75 so get your facts right.... -
I love how the guests who are most critical of this site and the people on it are the biggest whiners about "negativity."
The guest posting ban has been fantastic on the PH board. When is it coming here? -

I'm more in the mood for capital punishment. You in ?

As someone who is not a "guest" (read: plant), I will say that I like both places, but Cocoa is closer so they get my buck.

I didn't know what a decent chocolate drink was until I had stuff there. The drinks are nice and cool and the most real chocolate--not overly sugar/fat-ladden like most are--I've ever had since... I dunno...
He has a Brooklyn store too (in DUMBO). The chocolate-covered candied ginger is my favorite dessert ever!
The dumbo location is also nice b/c you can get your yummies and go sit by the water. I like to go in a post-rice food coma. cause chocolate and cream always make for a good pick-me-up.
Winter is the best time to go as his hot chocolate is to die for. Thick, almost on the bitter side. It's a nice offshoot from his strange-to-me combinations of itty bitty chocolates. I guess I just don't have a taste for lavender in food... -

if you wanna die and go to heaven
try the "Hot Bittersweet Chocolate" at the chocolate room
i don't know of anyone else who makes a drink this delicious
two thumbs up! -
DAMN IT! I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO WEEN MYSELF OFF THE HOT CHOCOLATE FROM THE CHOCOLATE ROOM.
ALAS, I WILL BE THERE TONIGHT, GETTING MY FIX. THANKS EVERYONE! -
I went in on Sunday and had the Funky Monkey (Dark Chocolate and Banana Syrup), it was REALLY good.
However, the "large" cup was REALLY small. The size of a small dunkachino from Dunkin' Donuts. And at $4.50+change, I was a bit surprised for the price and what I got for it.

Am I the only one who has never had a bad experience at Lobo?
-
Not sure if this is where you meant to post it, but I went to Lobo on 5th the other night, and I thought it was REALLY good. My Margharita wasn't too good (I could make a better one at home), but the food was really good.

I didn't mind Cocoa Bar too much (thought it was not as good as the Chocolate Room, but not bad) in the past, but the last time we went the service was so awful that we're never going back.
Apparently we arrived before table service started, but no one mentioned that (and we've been there around that time before and had reasonable service) and we waited for ages before we finally wandered up to the counter and were told that we 'should have known table service hasn't started yet.'
We thought that was odd, but ordered anyway and sat back down; as a party of three, we had to move a chair from another table since the seating is such a mess there. Toward the end of our 'meal' the waiter came over to tell us that we couldn't have the other chair anymore as it was in 'someone else's section' and one or all of us would have to move -- the place was still empty and we were paying our bill, so we were not best pleased at being told that we had to give up one of our chairs/move while we paid. It was so ridiculous -- we could understand if there'd been a wait or at least another party there, but we were the only people there.
Adding that experience to the consistently poor service overall, we won't be going back -- and hey, we live closer to the Chocolate Room anyway! -
I keep trying to like this place, but they make it hard.
I was there today for an hour or so.
- The music was AWFUL. I mean truly awful. A selection of NEW Paul McCartney, Edie Brickell......um, I can't even remember what else
- It was FREEZING. I wasn't the only one who thought so - heard many people complain, but they didn't seem to want to do anything about it
- The bathroom REEKED like piss. Like 1,000 people with bad aim. They need to mop that floor.
- Not a single "regular" tea. I'm not a fan of cocoa in my tea, and I don't drink coffee.
- They filled my tea mug so high that I couldn't walk without spilling a fair share of it.
Still searching for a good place to go that :
a) is relatively stroller-free
b) doesn't play their music SO loudly that I read the same sentence 5 times (that rules out Tea Lounge)
c) has internet access
Any suggestions? I'm in WT, so South Slope or N. Slope on 7th would work (but 4th Ave. and/or 5th + too far North are too far) -
I forgot to mention the annoying routine of ordering ("a medium tea to stay, please") and having the person shout to somebody standing all of 2 feet from them "MEDIUM TEA TO STAY"

Have you tried Naidres? It can be hard to get a table in there sometimes, because people order a cup of coffee and then sit with it for six hours, but otherwise it meets your criteria (not 100% sure about the internet access but I think they have it).

No, I've never gone in there. Not sure why. I'll have to check it out.
Thanks for the suggestion. -

In the "minus" column for them, they 86ed, um, a friend of mine. -
does that mean fired?
-
I like 12th Street. Never thought about going there in the day for tea. Do people go there during the day with newspapers and such?
-
no idea, but they must be doing something during the day because i've never seen a laptop there at night.
-
Why did they fire your friend? I have a friend who was fired from a restaurant. He admitted to me that he was told about a specific policy that he chose to ignore. At least he knows it was his own damn fault.
-
i just go to 12th street for the mussels and alcohol
isn't this thread about the chocolate room? -
Um, no, it's about Cocoa Bar. Stop drinking so early
-
how'd you know
