S - Shuttle Train

It comes pretty frequent for me... even on the weekends... when I take it to the C train at Nostrand ( I know I could walk to Washington/Clinton but its windy at Atlantic).

hey gang/neighbors...

when i moved to prosppect btwn franklin & bedford 7 yrs ago, the shuttle was in the middle of being worked on. back in the day, NOBODY ever used it because it was unsafe... today its great and incidents are rare.

when it opened, i was jumpin for joy... i was so over walkin from our block to either connections in the winter!

as with any station... even times sq... if you're comin/goin in the late hrs... be careful, mindful, etc and you'll be fine.

To my understanding, the MTA closed it in '96 and said they would not be reopening it. It had the lowest patronage of any station in the entire system.

sadly, no. the jewish hospital is owned by the same company as the taffee st lofts, where i used to live. (kida off subject, not about the shuttle train, but the actual building where the original poster intends to live)

Yeah, there have been a lot of discussions here about maintenance problems at the Jewish Hospital building.

Thanks!! That was interesting. I was just lazy, and thought the Dean street stop if it was open would be closer to us...

Acutally I google news searched and one of the first things I got was a post article with this:

"The Franklin Avenue shuttle in Brooklyn and the Rockaway Park shuttle in Queens were the most prompt trains at 99.7 percent and 99.2 percent averages, respectively. "

Hey, I live in the Jewish Hospital on the Classon side, so I'll throw my pennies in. I don't take the shuttle very often, but when I do (range between afternoon and very late night) I never have to wait very long. I'd say during the day the longest I've ever waiting is maaaybe 10 minutes, if even. Obviously late night it's a bit longer, like any train. And yes, there have been some violent incidents on the shuttle, but I've never seen any or felt unsafe. Doesn't mean they don't happen, and it certainly doesn't mean you should feel lulled into a false sense of security. That goes for the whole neighborhood. I love it here, and I never really feel like I'm in any danger, but you've always got to be aware that sometimes things happen. I lived here for about 2 1/2 years now, and I've only had one run-in with anyone, and that's when some 16-year-old kid mugged me at 6 o'clock in the evening. Just keep your eyes open, but don't be afraid.

I live on Park next to the shuttle and I only use it to get to the C or the B/Q lines. To get to Eastern Parkway (2/3/4/5) I always walk unless I have something very heavy to carry home.

if I was the mta, I would connect the shuttle to the G train. It would make the G train connect to lots of lines, and the shuttle worth riding.

Take a look at this map, you'll see what I'm talking about.

..it would end the need to always go to Manhattan to get from Brooklyn to Queens, because the G train would actually connect to things.

Scenic?! You've obviously never taken the A train to Far Rockaway, huh?

I remember there was an old hiphop video in the 90s that showed some of the S train environs (this S train, of course, not the one that goes through Rockaway Park and was in a different -- and decidedly crappier -- hiphop video). The station was covered with graffiti and just looked scary.

But at the same time, as a little graff head back then, I was totally drawn to what looked like the Disneyland of graffiti. *drooool*

I never did bomb it, and I've only taken it once on a sunday morning after a party. Hard to judge the safety of it based on that....

the shuttle is my favorite train. it's so close to my door that i think of it as my driveway.

i ride all the time -- basically every time i take the subway -- and i've felt sketched out exactly once. nothing happened, i just felt weird about a couple of folks. that's it. in 3 years.

and while i agree about the trip to far rockaway, there are some nice view from the humble S, and it's a LOT closer to my house.

plus, the drivers are the most likely in the system to hold to doors while you run for the train. thumbs up.

I find the shuttle works nicely for me if I am in Manhattan near the Q train. It's faster than transferring in Atlantic to the 2/3 and great on the weekends when it seems that every train BUT the Q is completely screwy.

I can't believe the amount of graffiti on the way from Park Pl to Franklin/Eastern stop. Seems like every wall and window is covered. Just wish it looked a bit better. There are some awesome graffiti murals done around, but these are just name tags.
