mysterious fence at underhill playground

A personal story: I headed off to the Underhill playground today with the little sprout. As I walked down Prospect, I had a vision of her giggling uncontrollably as her swing arcs a little higher than ever before.

Sadly it was but a daydream--the playground was fenced off.

Anyone know what's up? I saw no notices, although I was too shocked to look closely.

  • Yep. The long-delayed Underhill Playground renovation is finally taking place. This is the dailyheights.com blog post from June:

Underhill Playground: No Reno Till September

    image

DELAYED AGAIN: Renovations of the Underhill Ave. playground between Park Place and Prospect Place. Last we heard, they were going to shut the gates at the end of May.

WHY: Tish James via the Prospect Heights Parents list: "I spoke to the Bklyn Commissioner of Parks who informed me of the following; The project has been delayed because Parks Dept. cannot transplant trees during the summer. However, A contractor has been selected, funds are in place and the start date is September. They promised me that the start date was real and will advise if there are any changes."

THE GOOD NEWS: Kids have all summer to play!

  • ah, progress.
    so they promise.

I guess we'll be at mount prospect park, which is better furnished and, I'll wager, underused.
  • Got a brief run-down on the status/scope of the Underhill Playground project last night:
    - it is an $890K project funded by the Borough President's Office,
    - it is getting entirely new playground equipment and benches,
    - it will have a spray shower,
    - the handball courts will be rehabbed
    - contrary to the rumors, razor wire will NOT be used at the top of the fence: rather, the fence will be significantly higher than it is currently.
    - It should be done by June 2006

But in the mean time, yes, please, do come use Mount Prospect! my 2 year old daughter loves it, and the more of the toddler/pre school set we have playing there, the less likely the pre-teen/teen aged set will be to hang out or run rampant in the playground.
  • if that bargain holds up, that's nice. who told you?

Wait, are the Nets moving to Underhill??
  • I am actually on Community Board 8, and co-chair its Parks and Recreation Committee. The Parks department gave us a run down on the project at our regular meeting - first Tuesday of the month, 6:00 PM, at St. John's Rec Center, Prospect btw Troy and Schenectady...
