Advice on BoCoCa or Prospect Heights or PSlope or BBurg

My boyfriend and I are looking to upgrade to a larger apartment now that we can afford more, and I find myself going in circles trying to decide which neighborhood would be best for us. Of course we want a lot of space (preferably 2 bdrms), we want to be close to trains (ACL ideal, BD or 23, even N also fine, any easy commute to 15th st/9th ave), it has to allow cats, safe neighborhood, and a good kitchen is really really important to me. A big plus is a space that actually has character.

We can spend up to $2600 and we don't need to move until September, so I am hoping that I can take the time to find a great place and avoid a broker fee. I would love to hear opinions on which neighborhood will get us the most for our money, or simply how much current residents like or dislike their hoods. I'm now focusing on Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, or Williamsburg (as far as Graham Ave), even Clinton Hill/Ft Greene if it's close to trains. Any advice for us?
