Driver of Delivery Truck Is Shot In Latest of Brooklyn Holdups

    By JOE SEXTON
    Published: August 23, 1994

The holdups have become routine along Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn. The Hostess bakery truck was hit a month ago. The robbery of the Pepsi truck came a week later, the take limited to the $40 torn out of the shirt pocket of the driver because the safe in the back was bolted to the floor. The United Parcel Service delivery truck was next.

The routine continued yesterday in Bedford-Stuyvesant, its numbing familiarity broken only by gunfire.

Thomas Reilly, a 41-year-old truck driver and a delivery man for Boars Head Meat Company, was shot once in the chest after he was robbed by three teen-agers outside a grocery store at 920 Myrtle Avenue, the police said. Mr. Reilly was in critical condition last night at Kings County Hospital Center.

"These kids work these streets like they own them, their guns out in the open," said Ivan Rodriguez, whose father owns the store, the Shop Smart bodega, where Mr. Reilly had just received a $175 payment for his delivery of cold cuts. Youthful Robbers

The police combed the Tompkins Houses across the street from the store yesterday afternoon. A bloodhound paced along Myrtle Avenue, trying to pick up the trail of the three youths, all estimated by an eyewitness to be 16 or younger. The meat truck, new and glistening and locked, sat in the rain.

Mr. Reilly had just brought his weekly delivery to Elias Rodriguez and his sons. He did not order his customary sandwich, but spent a half-hour, talking and taking inventory. He walked past the Lethal Enforcers video game, complete with holstered guns, and into the street. He was climbing into the cab of the truck when the three youths arrived.

One shot was fired from a handgun. Mr. Reilly toppled across the truck's seat.

"He wasn't conscious," said Officer Dolores Pilnacek, the first police officer at the scene. "I've worked this neighborhood for seven years. The drivers are always scared. The people with the guns are always 15 to 21."

A woman who identified herself only as Mary, said: "It happened so fast. I walked by when he was arriving, and when I came back, he had a hole in his chest. It's unreal."

Unreal, but familiar. When the detectives had gone, the television cameras packed up and the store again opened for business. Mario Cumberbatch, 8, and Wayeed Foster, 13, sat on their bicycles next to the truck. Mario's father was killed three months ago in a hail of gunfire on Myrtle Avenue. Wayeed's mother was an innocent bystander, shot dead eight years ago.

"Shootings?" Mario said. "I don't think about them."

The only error in that report is that he was shot in the back, after he had turned over the money
