Local bowling alleys fined for illegal raffles
Owners: Leagues, not centers, do raffles

    By David P. Willis • BUSINESS WRITER • April 7, 2009

State inspectors have fined 59 bowling alleys in New Jersey, including 10 in Monmouth and Ocean counties, in a crackdown on 50/50 raffles at bowling centers, officials announced Monday.

Inspectors from the Legalized Games of Chance Control Commission, which regulates raffles and bingo, visited the state's 73 bowling alleys between last September and January at least twice. The bowling centers cited either sold or allowed the selling of 50/50 raffle tickets to both league players and the public, the state Division of Consumer Affairs said.

According to state law, only veterans organizations, religious congregations, charities, civic and service clubs, educational and fraternal organizations, senior citizen associations and clubs, and volunteer fire companies and first aid squads may hold raffles.

"The bowling alleys cited do not meet the requirements for holding raffles," said David Szuchman, consumer affairs director, in a statement.

Spokesman Jeff Lamm said it doesn't matter whether a bowling alley itself or a league there held the raffle. Each bowling center has the option of paying a $3,000 fine and complying with the law or requesting a formal hearing to contest the violations.

According to the state Division of Consumer Affairs, the 10 bowling alleys in Monmouth and Ocean counties that were cited are: Brunswick Zone Lanes, Hazlet; Memory Bowling, Shrewsbury; Howell Lanes, Howell; Shore Lanes, Neptune; Country Lanes, Manalapan; AMF Strathmore Lanes, Aberdeen; Bradley Beach Recreation Bowling Center, Bradley Beach; Lanes at Sea Girt, Wall; Brunswick Lakewood Lanes, Lakewood; and Playdrome of Toms River, Toms River.

Haave a blast. Don't worry about everything. Have a drink before you get on the plane. Just remember, you're going to see your son. Enjoy every minute of it. Have a safe trip and remember me to the POPE. I love you and will see you soon.

Hey Anthony - Why did you mention Felix's when you put Jimmy Roselli's video up??? I can't believe it, I also think of Felix's restaurant when I hear Jimmy Roselli........I also always remember, eating at Felix's, it felt like every Sunday, it was always so cold in that place and then we would walk out in the summer and the heat would hit us, back then when you were young the heat felt good, now it feels like we are going to melt....lol lol

Does anyone remember getting free tickets to go see shows like Jimmy Rosselli, Pat Cooper and Jerry Vale at the Prospect Theater. I always got my tickets from Frank, the produce guy on 5th Between 17th and 18th.

I also heard the Beatles for the very first time on the juke box at Felix's and I will never forget it. I was having a pizza, although I usually had their baked ziti since I liked Lenny's pizza beter.

Did you know you can't get a good zeppoli in Florida?

Yup, that was it. Thank you, Anthony. That's the first one I heard there. The second one was "I Want to Hold your Hand", which I played exactly 3 minutes after the first one. It was a Saturday, just before noon and I was there with Rosanne Erico and Diane Zdaniecki. Can't remember what I was wearing but every other detail is crystal clear.
